Telangana Cabinet Decides to Implement 42% reservation for Backward Classes

The 19th Cabinet of the Telangana government has decided to implement 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in the upcoming local body elections. This move comes four months after the Telangana Assembly passed two key legislations enabling 42% reservation for BCs in government jobs, educational institutions, and urban and rural local body polls.

Cabinet Ministers Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and Poonam Prabhakar announced during a brief press interaction in Hyderabad on Thursday that an ordinance to this effect will be promulgated soon.

Local body elections in Telangana are scheduled to take place within the next three months, as per the Telangana High Court’s directive. The bill, which was passed by the Assembly in March, is based on findings from the state’s caste census, which revealed that Backward Classes constitute 56.33% of Telangana’s total population.
