Sugar Prices Expected to Decline Within a Week According to ISMA

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has stated that sugar prices may begin to decline within the next seven days. This announcement aims to address growing concerns regarding the recent surge in sugar prices. ISMA emphasised that India does not face a sugar shortage and assured that the current stock levels are satisfactory, thereby negating fears of scarcity.

According to ISMA, the rise in sugar prices is primarily linked to market sentiment rather than a genuine supply deficit. Reportedly, prices have surged from approximately Rs 42 to Rs 55, marking an increase of around 16 per cent. However, ISMA maintains that this price hike should not be attributed to a lack of available sugar.

The association has indicated that various factors, including adverse weather conditions, are affecting sugarcane yields. Additionally, higher crushing rates in Maharashtra and specific variety-related issues in Uttar Pradesh are also influencing the overall market landscape.

Factors Contributing to Price Increase

ISMA President Niraj Shirgaonkar highlighted that the upcoming festive season has led to an increase in demand for sugar. This seasonal demand has reportedly contributed to rising prices. Furthermore, supply challenges from key sugar-producing regions like Brazil have added additional pressure to the market.

Shirgaonkar pointed out that speculation is a significant factor influencing recent price fluctuations. He noted that bulk buyers have begun to stockpile sugar, which has removed supplies from regular circulation. This behaviour has created what ISMA termed an “artificial shortage” in the market.

The association remains optimistic about the situation, anticipating that market sentiment will improve shortly. ISMA expects that as conditions normalise, sugar prices will likely start to ease within the forthcoming week.

Future Outlook for Sugar Stock and Prices

ISMA has projected that the opening stock for the upcoming year will be approximately 35 lakh tonnes. This anticipated stock level reinforces the confidence that supplies will remain at a comfortable level, alleviating concerns over future shortages.

In summary, while current sugar prices have risen due to a confluence of factors including festive demand and market speculation, ISMA assures that the underlying supply situation is stable. The association encourages stakeholders to remain calm, as it expects a return to stability in the sugar market soon.

Overall, the information provided by ISMA serves to clarify the reasons behind the recent sugar price hikes and to reassure consumers regarding the availability of sugar in the market. With an optimistic outlook, the association aims to ease anxieties surrounding sugar pricing in the near future.
