SSC Opens Applications for 1,748 Junior Engineer Positions

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has initiated the online application process for the Junior Engineer (JE) Examination 2026. Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for the Junior Engineer and Scientific Assistant positions through the official SSC website, ssc.gov.in. The window for applications opened on September 2 and will close on September 22, 2026. The final date for payment of the application fee is September 23, 2026. Candidates will also have the opportunity to modify their applications between September 28 and September 30, until 11 pm. During this timeframe, applicants can make corrections and resubmit their applications twice.

This recruitment drive aims to fill 1,748 vacancies across various government organisations and offices. The positions are classified as Group B under Level 6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission, offering a salary range of Rs 35,400 to Rs 1,12,400. The SSC JE 2026 Paper 1 is tentatively set to take place in October-November 2026, while Paper 2 is expected to be conducted in December 2026. A detailed exam schedule will be announced by the Commission at a later date.

Positions and Eligibility Criteria

The recruitment includes Junior Engineer roles in various disciplines, such as Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Electrical and Mechanical, and Telecom. These positions will be available across multiple organisations, including the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Central Water Commission, Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Military Engineer Services (MES), National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), Department of Telecommunications, and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. Moreover, the notification encompasses openings for Scientific Assistant in the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Eligibility requirements differ based on the specific post. For many Junior Engineer roles, candidates must possess a degree or a three-year diploma in the relevant engineering discipline. Some positions may also necessitate relevant work experience. For instance, candidates applying for the JE Civil position at the BRO must possess either a degree in Civil Engineering or a three-year diploma, along with two years of pertinent experience. Eligibility criteria also vary for the Electrical, Mechanical, and Telecom positions.

For the Scientific Assistant role in IMD, candidates are required to have a bachelor’s degree in a Science field where Physics is one of the subjects or an equivalent degree in areas such as Computer Science, Computer Applications, Electronics, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Instrumentation, Information Technology, or Telecommunication Engineering.

Age Limit and Application Fee Structure

The age of candidates will be determined as of August 1, 2026. For positions with an upper age limit of 30 years, candidates must be born between August 2, 1996, and August 1, 2008. Those applying for positions with a maximum age of 32 years should have been born between August 2, 1994, and August 1, 2008. Age relaxation provisions will be available for candidates from reserved categories as per government regulations, with a relaxation of five years for SC/ST candidates and three years for OBC candidates. Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) may enjoy relaxation of up to 10 to 15 years, depending on their category.

The application fee for this recruitment is Rs 100. Women candidates and candidates belonging to SC, ST, PwBD, and Ex-Servicemen categories are exempt from paying this fee. Payments can be made online using BHIM UPI, net banking, or debit cards. Prior to application, candidates must complete a One-Time Registration (OTR) on the new SSC website, as the OTR generated on the old website will not be accepted.

Applications can be submitted either through the SSC website or the ‘mySSC’ mobile application. The SSC has confirmed that this new application process will ensure a more streamlined experience for candidates.
