India participated in a major roundtable on snow leopard research and conservation held at the AN Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution under the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

The meeting was organised as part of a Partnership Agreement between the Interregional Association ‘Irbis’ and the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), established in December 2025 to strengthen international cooperation on snow leopard conservation.

India Highlights Science-Driven Conservation

Representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) presented India’s progress in protecting snow leopards through science-based conservation programmes.

Officials from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) shared developments in snow leopard population estimation, radio telemetry and genetic analysis. The discussions highlighted the growing role of technology and scientific research in monitoring the elusive species.

International Experts Participate

The roundtable brought together representatives from Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the AN Severtsov Institute, Moscow Zoo and Rosprirodnadzor.

Experts and conservation specialists also participated, contributing knowledge on snow leopard research, population monitoring and habitat protection.

Focus on Research and Population Monitoring

The discussions provided a platform for India and international partners to exchange research findings, conservation practices and monitoring techniques.

Participants explored opportunities for greater cooperation in population assessment, genetic studies, radio telemetry and other scientific approaches that can strengthen conservation planning.

Strengthening Global Conservation Cooperation

The meeting reinforced the need for coordinated international efforts to protect snow leopards, whose habitats span multiple countries and challenging mountainous landscapes.

India and its partners discussed developing conservation frameworks that can be adapted to local conditions while supporting biodiversity and ecological stability.

Building Long-Term Partnerships

Beyond knowledge sharing, the roundtable aimed to establish stronger relationships among governments, research institutions and conservation organisations.

The collaboration is expected to support future joint research projects and conservation initiatives focused on improving the survival prospects of snow leopards in their natural habitats.
