Horror Films Gain Popularity in Indian Box Office with Recent Releases

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent surge in box-office success for horror films in India is noteworthy, particularly with titles such as Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past, Obsession, and Backrooms. These films have demonstrated a distinct appeal, engaging audiences who appear to be increasingly interested in the genre. Following the release of various content-driven films, it is evident that horror has taken a prominent position among viewer preferences.

Historically, horror has occupied a vital space in the Indian cinematic landscape, but recent trends indicate a shift. The positive reception of these films suggests that audiences now favour fear-inducing narratives over traditional drama. The current box-office environment reflects a broader appetite for immersive entertainment, where communal experiences are highly sought after.

Box Office Performance Highlights

Haunted 3D, guided by director Vikram Bhatt, made a significant impact upon its release, earning an estimated Rs 2.50 crore nett on its opening day. As reported by Sacnilk, within four days, the film’s nett collection reached Rs 11.55 crore in India. This success is particularly notable given the film’s modest expectations and scale compared to its competitors, predominantly performing well in the Hindi belt.

In conjunction, the Hollywood horror thriller Backrooms attracted considerable attention, especially in urban multiplexes. The film grossed around Rs 1.50 crore on its opening day, culminating in a total gross of Rs 4.62 crore after four days. Initially perceived as an underdog, Backrooms succeeded in surpassing expectations, mirroring the enthusiastic response seen by Haunted 3D.

Obsession is also establishing strong numbers at the Indian box office. In its third week, the film grossed Rs 4 crore on Friday, June 12, maintaining nearly identical earnings from the previous Friday. The film’s cumulative gross in India has now reached approximately Rs 63.25 crore within 15 days, putting it on a path towards a total of Rs 100 crore, which is quite significant for an original international release.

Shifting Audience Preferences and Trends

The collective performance of these horror films signals a noticeable shift in audience preferences. Despite the historical presence of horror in Indian cinema, the recent achievements indicate a growing openness to high-concept horror narratives, diverging from traditional tropes characterised by jump scares and exorcisms. These innovative horror concepts are beginning to draw viewers away from more conventional dramatic storytelling.

Moreover, industry experts observe that the success of these films is largely attributed to their unique concepts, effective marketing strategies, and the immersive experiences they offer. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh highlighted that films like Backrooms have successfully engaged target audiences, even in smaller markets beyond major cities. He noted that the quiet yet impressive box-office performance of Haunted 3D mirrors the golden era of horror films, emphasising the genre’s market potential.

Another advantage of horror films is their cost-effectiveness. With a reported budget of Rs 15 crore for Haunted 3D, the film’s box-office achievements signify substantial profit margins. When films resonate well with audiences, as evidenced by the strong word-of-mouth surrounding Haunted 3D, Backrooms, and Obsession, filmmakers can reap even greater financial rewards. As box-office figures continue to favour horror, it appears that this genre may well dominate the cinematic landscape in the near future.
