CSR News: Tea Group Reinforces Commitment to Women Empowerment

Ahmedabad, India: Wagh Bakri Tea Group, a trusted name in the tea industry for 133 years, reinforced its commitment to the cause of women empowerment through a self-employment initiative. As part of the initiative, 50 women, who earlier received vocational training, were provided with self-employment kits to support their entrepreneurial journey.
The event, held at Shri Mehndi Nawaz Jung Hall, saw the distribution of kits related to beauty and wellness, stitching and embroidery. The initiative is supported by the Wagh Bakri Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Wagh Bakri Tea Group, with the objective of enhancing women’s earning capacity and enabling financial independence.
Vidisha Desai and Malvi Desai, Directors of Wagh Bakri Tea Group; Kirit Vasu, Trustee of Saurashtra Medical and Education Trust, and Rishikesh Pandya, Chief Development Officer of Project Life, were among the eminent guests at the kit distribution event.
Addressing the women, Ms. Vidisha Desai guided them on ethical business practices and encouraged them to pursue entrepreneurship. The women beneficiaries also shared their stories, inspiring others to embark on similar journeys.
Sanjay Singal, CEO of Wagh Bakri Tea Group, said, “These women come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of them are widowed or separated. This initiative provides them with new hope and a pathway to economic empowerment. Equipping them with the right skills and providing them with the resources to achieve economic independence will help create lasting change in their lives.
Wagh Bakri Tea Group aims to train 100 women and provide them with sustained support for self-employment under the initiative in the year 2024-25. The Wagh Bakri Foundation has allocated support of Rs. 18 lakh for the year towards this initiative, to create, enhance and sustain effective initiatives for women’s gainful employment and to assist them in setting up their own micro-units.
The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Saurashtra Medical & Educational Charitable Trust, which operates two skill training centres in Ahmedabad and Junagadh, and a garment production centre in Ahmedabad to support trainees.
