Congress Unveils First List of Candidates for Assam Assembly Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Congress party has announced its initial roster of 42 candidates for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections. This move comes even before the official election schedule has been revealed, indicating an early commencement of campaigning in this northeastern state. The announcement was made on Tuesday by K C Venugopal, general secretary (organisation) of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Key Candidates and Constituencies

Among the prominent candidates, Gaurav Gogoi, who serves as the president of Assam Congress and is also a Lok Sabha MP, will contend for the significant Jorhat constituency. Debabrata Saikia, who leads the Congress Legislature Party in Assam, is set to contest from Nazira. Former Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora will represent the party in Barchalla. This list is part of Congress’s strategy to reclaim influence in Assam, having been out of power since 2016.

Significance of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Seats

The candidate selection includes a noteworthy emphasis on seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Abdus Sobahan Ali Sarkar will run from Gauripur, Markline Marak from Goalpara West (ST), and Girish Baruah will contest in Bongaigaon. Mahananda Sarkar is positioned to vie for the Barpeta seat, which is also reserved for Scheduled Castes. Candidates for constituencies reserved for Scheduled Tribes include Ramen Singh Rabha from Boko-Chaygaon, Nandita Das from Hajo-Sualkuchi, and Satyabrat Kalita from Kamalpur.

Strategic Urban Constituencies

The list also features candidates targeting urban and strategically significant areas. Mira Borthakur Goswami will contest from Dispur, while Diganta Barman will take on the Barkhetri seat. Ashok Kumar Sarma is slated to run from Nalbari. These selections reflect the party’s intent to strengthen its foothold in both rural and urban segments of the electorate.

Electoral Timeline

The 126-member Assam Assembly election is anticipated to take place in April. The early release of candidates indicates Congress’s proactive approach as it prepares for the electoral contest in a state where it has faced challenges in recent years. The party aims to mobilize support and re-establish its presence in Assam’s political landscape.
