Chhattisgarh Announces Rs 1.72 Lakh Crore Budget with Focus on Developing Bastar

The CSR Journal Magazine

Chhattisgarh government has unveiled a budget of Rs 1.72 lakh crore for the fiscal year 2026-27, emphasizing development in areas such as education, health, irrigation, digital connectivity, and employment. The presentation was made by Finance Minister OP Choudhary, marking the third budget under the theme “SANKALP.”

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai described the budget as a robust commitment to advancing public welfare and development. The government’s aim is to elevate Chhattisgarh to a developed state by empowering essential sectors including agriculture, women’s rights, youth engagement, and labor employment.

Social Sector and Economic Initiatives

The budget allocates a significant portion for social initiatives, accounting for 40% of the total expenditure. About 36% is targeted at enhancing economic activity while 24% is dedicated to administrative and general services. Notably, a green budget of Rs 14,300 crore is designated for advancing environmental protection and sustainable development projects. The government aims to prioritize the development of Surguja, Bastar, and other historically Naxal-affected regions through these initiatives.

Transformative Steps in Education and Sports

In a significant move for the educational landscape of Bastar, the government announced plans for two “Education Cities” to be established in sensitive areas such as Abujhmad and Jagargunda, allocating Rs 100 crore for this initiative. Additionally, efforts to encourage sports and preserve cultural identity include events like the Bastar Olympics and Bastar Pandum, which aim to showcase local talent and promote a constructive regional identity. Furthermore, the creation of 1,500 new positions for Bastar Fighters is another step to engage and empower the local community.

Healthcare Initiatives for Remote Areas

Improving healthcare access in remote areas is another focus of the budget. Plans are underway to establish a super-speciality hospital in Jagdalpur, along with a medical college and a medical city in Dantewada. Recruitment drives for medical professionals will be initiated to ensure quality healthcare reaches the communities in these regions.

Investments in Irrigation and Agriculture

A major irrigation project has been proposed to construct a barrage on the Indravati River with an estimated cost of Rs 2,024 crore. This initiative is expected to boost agricultural productivity by providing irrigation facilities to an additional 32,000 hectares in the Bastar region. The government is also pledging to enhance the agricultural sector through significant financial investments. Rs 10,000 crore is earmarked for the Krishak Unnati Yojana, aimed at supporting farmers and promoting agricultural development.

Women’s Empowerment Measures

The budget includes substantial initiatives to empower women. A proposal for a 50 percent exemption on registration fees for property acquired in women’s names has been introduced, promoting financial security and property ownership. Additionally, the Rani Durgavati Yojana will provide Rs 1.5 lakh to eligible girls upon reaching the age of 18, while the Mukhyamantri Lakhpati Didi Parikrama Yojana will be launched along with plans to construct 250 Mahatari Sadans for further supporting women’s empowerment.

Healthcare Accessibility for Government Employees

The budget also includes provisions for a cashless medical scheme aimed at safeguarding the health of government employees. This scheme will allow employees to receive treatment at designated government and private hospitals without upfront cash payments, thereby facilitating easier access to healthcare. An allocation of Rs 100 crore is designated to support this healthcare initiative.
