Chandra Shekhar Azad, chief of the Aazad Samaj Party-Kanshi Ram and Member of Parliament, initiated an overnight protest within the Parliament complex on July 21. His demonstration is aimed at bringing attention to the alleged paper leak in examinations and police actions against protesting students during a Congress-led march the previous day. Azad has reiterated his demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

In a demonstration of solidarity with the youth leading the protests against perceived irregularities in the examination system, Azad expressed his concern over the government’s tactics for dealing with dissent. He stated that citizens have the right to express their grievances in a democratic society.

Azad’s commitment to support the protesters was evident as he declared, “Dissent cannot be suppressed in a democracy,” reinforcing his stance as he joined the ongoing agitation. He called attention to the prolonged struggle of students, including those who have been on hunger strike for 20 days, indicating a serious level of desperation among demonstrators.

Criticism of Police Actions and Call for Dialogue

During his protest, Azad condemned the police’s violent response to the protesters, labelling the actions as “brutal.” He expressed outrage over the treatment meted out to young demonstrators, stating that his conscience compelled him to participate in the protests. “I decided to fulfil my responsibility by joining the protest myself,” he noted, demonstrating his alignment with the cause championed by the students.

Azad conveyed his request for dialogue between the government and the protesters, stating, “I am sitting here to stand with those youths who are still protesting.” He emphasised the importance of listening to the voices of students who are not affiliated with any political factions but are simply pursuing their education amidst turmoil.

The Lok Sabha Speaker was also approached by Azad to discuss the pressing issues faced by the students and he expressed his willingness to engage in talks with any party in order to find a resolution. He cautioned that ignoring the concerns of the students might result in an escalation of protests.

Violence During Protest March and Subsequent Developments

The protest march that took place in New Delhi on July 20 turned violent, with reports indicating that over 118 police personnel were injured during clashes. In addition, approximately 60 protesters were also reported to have sustained injuries as tensions escalated. The Delhi Police indicated that demonstrators allegedly engaged in stone-pelting, vandalised property, and attempted to breach police barricades.

In response to the unrest, the police have registered FIRs against unidentified individuals regarding the alleged incidents of vandalism and stone-throwing near Connaught Place and Parliament Street. The police action has drawn criticism as officials try to manage the situation while ensuring public safety and maintaining order.

Meanwhile, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike demanding the resignation of the Education Minister, remains hospitalised at Safdarjung Hospital after being taken in by police on July 18. Though his vital signs have stabilised, he continues to decline intravenous fluids. Reports indicate he is under close observation by a team of medical professionals as he receives treatment for his condition.
