Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has emphasised the importance of directing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds towards primary education. During the Global CSR and Sustainability Summit 2026 in Bengaluru, he encouraged companies to collaborate with government schools to enhance educational infrastructure and improve learning outcomes statewide.

Shivakumar highlighted that the state government plans to create a dedicated monitoring system to oversee CSR initiatives, ensuring effective execution throughout Karnataka. He noted the significance of corporate involvement in societal progress, mentioning that nearly 10,000 CSR projects are currently active in the state.

The Chief Minister stated that accurate monitoring would foster transparency and accountability, with a new team established to evaluate the impacts of CSR activities on local communities. This initiative aims to ensure that CSR delivers measurable and meaningful social results beyond mere financial contributions.

Primary Education as a Focus Area

Mainly focusing on primary education, Shivakumar urged businesses to support government schools actively. He encouraged initiatives to upgrade classrooms, improve learning facilities, and provide skilled professionals to enhance educational quality in the state.

Praising the initiatives already taken by companies like Toyota, he called for more businesses to engage in school development efforts. According to the Chief Minister, CSR efforts should involve not only building infrastructure but also contribute to the growth of human capital through improved educational quality.

Shivakumar further suggested that CSR should be perceived as a long-term investment in sustainable development, rather than merely a charitable commitment. He acknowledged former Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s role in establishing the CSR framework in India, which has enabled substantial contributions towards social development from companies nationwide.

Karnataka’s Education and Technological Landscape

In his address, Shivakumar presented Karnataka as a hub for education and innovation, citing impressive statistics about healthcare and technology. The state produces approximately 13,900 doctors annually and around 1 lakh healthcare professionals each year, in addition to hosting an information technology sector that employs nearly 26 lakh individuals.

He stressed that Karnataka’s robust educational framework has significantly contributed to attracting global investments and establishing Bengaluru as India’s technological centre. Nonetheless, he initiated a call to action for the expansion of quality educational opportunities beyond Bengaluru, ensuring that students in rural areas have access to high-quality schools closer to home.

The Chief Minister acknowledged the critical role played by industrial centres like Electronics City and International Tech Park Bengaluru (ITPL) in propelling Karnataka’s economic development. He also recognised the contributions of organisations such as the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) towards the state’s industrial growth.

Future Directions and Economic Growth

Concluding his speech, Shivakumar addressed the transformative impact of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), on various industries and society as a whole. He underscored the necessity of continuous investments in education, skill enhancement, sustainability, and human capital development to maintain Karnataka’s economic advantages.

He outlined the importance of ensuring inclusive growth across the state, emphasising the need for investments that not only drive economic progress but also benefit all segments of society. This commitment to education and professional skill development aims to reinforce Karnataka’s leadership position in India’s dynamic economy.

On July 24, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal announced that the party has commenced the process of selecting District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents in Karnataka. This follows an initial meeting with the state leadership, where strategic discussions were held regarding the leadership structure. Venugopal informed reporters that further decisions would be made in due course as the process evolves.

During his address, Venugopal acknowledged that this gathering marked the beginning of the selection process. He emphasised the importance of this initial discussion with Karnataka Congress leaders and highlighted that additional plans will unfold as they move forward. This reflects the Congress party’s focus on aligning its local leadership with upcoming electoral strategies.

Leadership Restructuring After Chief Minister’s Appointment

The leadership restructuring within the Karnataka Congress has intensified since DK Shivakumar assumed the role of Chief Minister in June. The party is reportedly undergoing a significant overhaul as it seeks to bolster its organisational framework in the state. The cabinet under Shivakumar currently consists of 14 members, including Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, addressing key portfolios to enhance governance.

In the recent cabinet formation, Priyank Kharge was appointed to oversee Home Affairs, while Yathindra Siddaramaiah, son of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, took charge of Urban Development. This membership composition demonstrates the Congress party’s intent to reinforce its influence in state governance and address pressing issues through its cabinet.

As the party navigates its internal changes, discussions regarding cabinet expansions have reportedly been postponed, allowing for a concentrated focus on the selection of DCC presidents and other organisational matters. Congress leaders are keen to solidify their groundwork in Karnataka ahead of future electoral challenges.

Congress Supports NEET Protest Demands

In response to the ongoing nation-wide protests concerning the NEET paper leak, Venugopal articulated the Congress party’s support for several critical demands. He prominently stated that the party is advocating for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, as well as compensation for families of students who have tragically taken their own lives due to the distress caused by these events.

Venugopal elaborated on the demands, calling for an inquiry into the handling of protests by the Delhi Police, the withdrawal of cases against protesting students, and significant compensation measures for the families of deceased aspirants. He conveyed that these issues represent the major concerns of the protesting students, thus requiring an appropriate response from the Central Government.

Adding to this discourse, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi addressed the media earlier, supporting these same demands and showcasing an injured protester who suffered serious injuries during the demonstrations. The exigency of immediate measures has been highlighted, stressing the need for a governmental response to the rising unrest surrounding the NEET exam issues.

Concurrently, Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh held a meeting with the Cockroach Janata Party delegation. Nadda reported that discussions lasted nearly two hours, addressing three main demands alongside five suggested reforms for examination processes. He indicated a willingness to continue the dialogue in a subsequent meeting, signifying an ongoing engagement with stakeholders to navigate these pressing education-related matters.

Recent accusations of corruption have surfaced concerning the Karnataka Public Service Commission’s (KPSC) recruitment process for 400 Veterinary Officer positions. Candidates have reported that intermediaries requested up to Rs 80 lakh to influence the selection outcome. These claims suggest serious misconduct within the recruitment procedures.

Specifically, the recruitment involved 342 permanent positions along with 58 vacancies for backlog posts. Allegations have been made that this recruitment process has been tainted by the involvement of agents who manipulated outcomes to favour certain candidates, compromising the integrity of the selection.

Supporting these allegations, various candidates have produced a collection of evidence, including audio recordings, photographs, and videos. These materials reportedly capture discussions with alleged intermediaries and are being described as part of a sting operation aimed at exposing the manipulation within the recruitment process.

Protests by Veterinary Doctors Demand Action

In response to these allegations, a group of veterinary doctors conducted a protest outside the Vidhana Soudha Police Station. They gathered to voice their demands for a thorough and transparent investigation into the reported recruitment scandal. The demonstrators emphasised the need for accountability and insistence on fair practices in all recruitment activities.

The protest reflects the broader concern among veterinary professionals regarding transparency in government hiring processes. Participants expressed their commitment to ensuring that such practices do not undermine the professional standards expected within the veterinary sector.

Despite the ongoing controversy and public outcry, the authorities, including KPSC, have yet to provide a formal response or address the allegations being levelled against them. The lack of an immediate statement has further fueled apprehensions among the candidates and concerned parties.

Ongoing Investigations and Implications

The allegations regarding the KPSC recruitment process raise significant concerns regarding the integrity of public service commissions in India. If proven true, these claims could lead to far-reaching consequences for the involved officers and potentially reshape the recruitment framework for veterinary and other public service positions.

Authorities must now consider the allegations seriously and take necessary measures to investigate the claims thoroughly. The outcomes of these investigations could not only influence future recruitment processes but also restore trust among candidates and the public in the functioning of the KPSC.

As of now, there is no confirmation of the authenticity of the materials provided by the candidates, and the allegations remain unverified. The KPSC’s apparent silence on the issue might alter public perceptions and raise questions about the effectiveness of oversight mechanisms in place to ensure fairness and transparency in recruitment processes.

The recent tragedy in Hunsur, Karnataka, involves a 37-year-old man named Harish, who allegedly took the lives of his wife and two daughters before taking his own. The police reported these events occurred on July 21, with authorities being notified shortly after the incident took place. Upon arrival, the Hunsur Police Station Inspector and his team discovered the bodies of Harish, his wife Nikshita, aged 37, along with their daughters, Nikshita, 14, and Raksha, 8.

Details of the Alleged Crime

According to preliminary investigations, Harish is believed to have committed the act while his family was asleep. Reports indicate that he used a plastic bag to suffocate them by covering their noses and mouths. After this tragic act, he reportedly moved to the first floor of their residence and hanged himself. The manner in which these actions unfolded has raised significant concern and shock within the community.

In the course of investigating the scene, police uncovered a notebook which reportedly contained a death note. This note included the name Hanumantesh along with various written instructions. Notably, the contents outlined individuals to contact, documents to collect, and directives regarding how to manage certain affairs, particularly for Harish’s mother. It appears that he took the time to ensure care for her after his passing.

The presence of such a note suggests a premeditated arrangement, yet the full context and circumstances surrounding the events are still being examined by law enforcement agencies. Authorities are exploring multiple angles in their investigation to gather more information regarding Harish’s state of mind and the motivations driving his actions.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Response

The investigation into this case remains active, with police continuing to delve into the motives behind Harish’s actions. Currently, law enforcement has not established a clear reason for what led to the tragic events. The community is grappling with the impact of this incident, as families express their disbelief and sorrow over the loss of life.

Local residents are reportedly unsettled by the events, and many have come forward expressing their condolences to the affected family. Discussions within the community reflect a mix of shock and trepidation, as such incidents are rare in the area. As the investigation continues, more details are likely to emerge, shedding light on the complexities surrounding this tragedy.

The police have stated that they will ensure a thorough inquiry, as the well-being of the community and the need for closure in such heartbreaking circumstances take precedence. The authorities are committed to understanding all facets of the incident, while also providing support to the victims’ families as they navigate this difficult period.

The recent fire incident in the Kencharlahalli village of Chintamani taluk, located in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district, resulted in substantial damage to three shops. The local police have reported that the fire, which occurred late at night on July 21, is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. The affected establishments included a mobile shop, an electronics store, and a tea shop.

The business owners, identified as Shirish, Shashikumar, and Suresh, suffered significant losses as their goods were consumed by the flames. The combined value of the destroyed items is estimated to be several lakhs of rupees. This incident has raised concerns within the local business community regarding fire safety and emergency preparedness.

Response to the Fire

Fire and Emergency Services were alerted promptly and arrived at the scene to control the blaze. Their swift response helped mitigate the fire’s spread to nearby establishments, potentially saving further property from damage. The fire-fighting crews worked diligently to extinguish the flames, ensuring that nearby businesses remained unaffected.

Local law enforcement officers examined the site of the fire and have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. They are currently collecting evidence and statements from witnesses to ascertain the cause. Fire safety measures in the area will likely be reviewed as part of this process to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Preliminary assessments indicate that the rapid spread of the fire could be attributed to the materials stored within the shops, which may have contributed to the intensity of the blaze. The authorities will examine all possible factors that led to this unfortunate event.

Previous Fire Incident in Shivamogga

This fire incident in Chikkaballapur is not isolated. Just days earlier, on July 19, a massive fire occurred at a paper packaging factory located in the Old Mandli Industrial area of Shivamogga city. The fire at the factory was reportedly responsible for destroying packaging materials worth crores of rupees.

More than 25 personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services were deployed to manage the situation at the factory. Firefighting operations continued for over an hour as teams worked to bring the fire under control. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties among the workforce, which numbers over 400 employees.

The factory has been in operation for approximately 40 years and was owned by a businessman based in Mumbai, named Zakir Hajibhai. The sudden fire raised alarm in the area, prompting discussions about safety precautions within industrial operations and the need for stringent fire regulations.

Dr Kiran Honannavar, aged 45, was allegedly murdered inside his apartment in Dharwad, Karnataka, on July 15, 2026. His eight-year-old son was also reportedly stabbed during the incident. Both individuals were discovered in a gruesome scene, prompting immediate police action.

Local authorities received an alert from neighbours about suspicious circumstances in the residence. Upon arrival, police found significant bloodshed in the apartment. Disturbingly, a video from the scene purportedly depicts Dr Honannavar’s wife, Priyanka, who is also a doctor, lying on the bed and engaged with her phone while her husband and son lay injured nearby.

Emergency services were promptly contacted, and the Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner, N Shashikumar, took personal charge of the situation. He transported the injured child to a private hospital after confirming the boy was still alive. Currently, he is receiving medical care for his injuries.

Family’s Alarm and Police Involvement

On the evening of July 15, Kiran’s friends and relatives became concerned after they were unable to reach him through multiple calls on the previous night and morning. When Priyanka answered their calls, she initially informed them that her husband was resting and later claimed that he had gone out on duty.

Eventually, after receiving no further communication and growing anxious, family members visited the couple’s flat. Upon entering the premises, they discovered Kiran and his son in a pool of blood. Priyanka was reportedly found unresponsive on the bed, still using her phone, which raised immediate suspicion among those who entered the apartment.

The police have since launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding this shocking event. Investigators are gathering evidence and testimonies, as they attempt to piece together the timeline of events leading up to the incident.

Legal Proceedings and Continued Investigation

As the investigation unfolds, officers are likely to pursue charges against Priyanka, given the alarming evidence presented at the scene. The police are focusing on gathering forensic evidence, including blood samples and fingerprints, which may provide clarity on the sequence of actions before the police arrived.

The psychological state of Priyanka is also under scrutiny, with experts suggesting that understanding her mental health may be essential in determining any motive. Support from mental health professionals may be sought during the investigation, especially considering the child’s traumatic experience.

This tragic case has drawn attention in the local community, and discussions around domestic issues and mental health have emerged as crucial conversations. Authorities hope to provide more updates as the investigation progresses, ensuring that justice is served for Dr Kiran Honannavar and his son.

Karnataka is set to build India’s inaugural government-driven Artificial Intelligence (AI) university, according to Chief Minister D K Shivakumar. This initiative aims to integrate AI into the state’s developmental plans, emphasising the need for advanced AI talent and fostering collaboration among academic institutions, industries, and government bodies. The announcement was made during the launch of Google IO Connect India 2026 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre in Bengaluru.

The primary objective of the new university is to generate a skilled workforce in AI, enhancing both research capabilities and practical applications. Alongside this institution, the state will also create an AI Hub, envisioned as an incubation centre supporting startups, researchers, and companies engaged in AI projects.

Karnataka’s Vision for an AI-Driven Future

During his speech, Shivakumar expressed a desire for Karnataka to become an “AI-native State,” where AI technologies would enhance governance and public services. He noted that AI applications would be crucial in various sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and citizen services. The intention is to utilise AI for improving teaching methods, enabling early medical diagnoses, providing agricultural advice, accelerating government service delivery, and offering solutions to support small enterprises.

Shivakumar referred to AI as a defining technological revolution, asserting that Karnataka is strategically positioned to lead this transformation. He highlighted the state’s significant contribution to India’s software exports, claiming the figure to be around 40 per cent. Furthermore, more than 17,000 startups operate within Karnataka, supported by numerous Global Capability Centres (GCCs). This robust ecosystem will be bolstered by the proposed initiatives.

The state government aims to expand its digital infrastructure, including developing data centres, to facilitate AI research and cloud computing. This enhancement will address the prerequisites of innovation and industry needs, while simultaneously producing skilled professionals equipped for the growing AI sector.

Collaboration with Tech Giants

In his address, Shivakumar extended an invitation to Google for deepening its partnership with Karnataka. He proposed collaborative efforts in five key areas: developing AI solutions for education, healthcare, and agriculture, providing support to AI startups, enhancing AI learning opportunities for students, undertaking responsible AI research, and making long-term investments in Karnataka’s technology ecosystem.

Shivakumar acknowledged Google’s established presence in Bengaluru, appreciating its contributions to strengthening the city’s status as a global technology hub. The potential partnership aims to leverage Google’s experience and resources to advance Karnataka’s AI ambitions.

This initiative is part of Karnataka’s broader strategy to position itself as a global leader in responsible and inclusive AI innovation. By merging higher education, startup support, research, and public-sector engagement, the state is working towards creating an ecosystem where AI significantly contributes to economic development and enhances the quality of life for citizens.

Veteran singer S Janaki was laid to rest with state honours in Mysuru, Karnataka, on July 12, 2026. The singer passed away at the age of 88 due to cardiac arrest the previous day. A wide array of fans, family members, and admirers gathered at the Maharaja College grounds to pay their last respects. The atmosphere was one of solemnity as those present sought to honour her legacy and contributions to Indian music.

Apsara Vydyula Remembers Her Grandmother

During the last rites, Apsara Vydyula, S Janaki’s granddaughter, addressed the media, expressing profound grief over her grandmother’s passing. She characterised the loss as one that transcended their family, affecting the entire nation and the global community. Apsara emphasised that Janaki’s artistic spirit would endure through her extensive body of music. “This is a great loss, not just to our family, but for the whole nation, for the whole world,” she remarked.

Apsara further noted Janaki’s versatility and her exceptional singing skill, stating that those familiar with her work would recognise her expressive talent. She conveyed that it was a day of mourning not only for their family but for everyone who had been touched by Janaki’s artistry. “She was a remarkable talent,” Apsara added, fondly recalling her grandmother as a person who radiated kindness and generosity.

In her remembrance, Apsara described Janaki as a source of inspiration, suggesting that her unique presence would be deeply missed globally. She highlighted that her grandmother was more than an artist; she was a compassionate individual with a deep love for animals, illuminating her character beyond her celebrity status. “She was a kind, gentle, wonderful person,” Apsara reflected.

Public Mourning and Tributes

Following Janaki’s death, a wave of tributes poured in from public figures, friends, and fans alike. Notable personalities and politicians shared their condolences, underscoring her impact on the music scene in India. Janaki was celebrated for her contributions across various languages, making her a beloved figure not only in the South but nationwide.

Apsara also conveyed Janaki’s lasting influence, affirming that the singer’s essence would continue to resonate through her work. “She will be greatly missed, but forever, she will live on through her music,” Apsara stated. This sentiment reflected the collective sense of loss felt by many, as her melodies have provided joy to countless listeners.

Janaki had reportedly been hospitalised prior to her passing. Apsara confirmed the news on social media, writing that S Janaki left peacefully, enveloped in the love of her family. Along with her expressions of grief, she expressed gratitude for the immeasurable joy Janaki’s music has brought to millions, capturing the multi-faceted nature of her grandmother’s legacy.

As the outpouring of grief continues, the contributions of S Janaki to Indian music remain a lasting testament to her talent. Recognised as “The Nightingale of South India,” she is remembered for her extraordinary output of songs that bridged linguistic and cultural divides, solidifying her place in the hearts of many. The farewell marked not just the end of an era but also a celebration of a life dedicated to music and kindness.
