The Baloch National Movement (BNM) recently hosted a conference at the Geneva Press Club that aimed to shine a light on the human rights conditions in Balochistan. The event gathered human rights activists, political analysts, journalists, and parliamentarians from various countries to discuss the challenges faced by the Baloch community. Titled “Occupied Balochistan at the Crossroads: Human Rights, Justice and the Struggle for Freedom,” the conference included a tribute to Advocate Zubair Baloch, a well-known Baloch human rights advocate and former leader of the Baloch Students Organisation (BSO).

Tribute to Advocate Zubair Baloch

During the event, Faheem Baloch, a member of the BNM, emphasised the conference’s purpose as an honour to Zubair Baloch and an endeavour to draw global attention to the plight of the Baloch people. He stated, “Today, an important seminar on Balochistan was held at the Geneva Press Club under the auspices of the Baloch National Movement. The seminar was primarily organised to pay tribute to Shaheed Zubair, former Chairman of the BSO and a member of the BNM.” This remark clearly demonstrated the conference’s dedication to acknowledging the contributions of Zubair Baloch in advocating for human rights.

Furthermore, Faheem Baloch noted that attendees from various sectors voiced their solidarity with the Baloch cause, shedding light on the alleged human rights abuses occurring in the region. He called for a more thorough international examination of the issues affecting Balochistan, suggesting that the United Nations should initiate special fact-finding missions specifically focused on the region. “We urge the UN to ensure that these missions can visit Balochistan to investigate the reported violations,” he added.

Contention Surrounding Balochistan’s Human Rights Situation

Zubair Baloch, remembered for his activism in human rights and political issues, was a prominent figure for advocating against enforced disappearances and supporting the rights of the Baloch population. His supporters and various Baloch political organisations celebrate his legacy as a notable voice in the ongoing struggle for Baloch human rights. The BNM, as a nationalist political entity, is fundamentally focused on securing the political rights and self-determination of the Baloch people, aspiring for an independent Balochistan.

Balochistan is historically marked by political turmoil, an active insurgency, and allegations concerning enforced disappearances and arbitrary detentions. At the same time, the region has faced violence from armed Baloch separatist groups targeting security forces, prompting security operations by Pakistani authorities. These dynamics contribute to a complex landscape of human rights violations, political dissent, and security activities, which continue to generate significant contention and debate internationally.

The Geneva conference offered a strategic platform for participants to articulate these urgent issues to a global audience. It endeavoured to generate heightened engagement from international bodies, including the United Nations, regarding the human rights situation in Balochistan. The event highlighted the need for sustained dialogue and action to address the serious allegations of human rights violations prevalent in the region, aiming to foster greater awareness and facilitate potential avenues for resolution.
