Half of Heart Attacks Strike Without Warning, Experts Urge Screenings After 40

The CSR Journal Magazine

An alarming statistic has emerged from health experts indicating that fifty per cent of heart attack incidents occur without any prior warning signs. Dr Rahul Chandola, Chairman of the Institute of Heart and Lung Diseases and a cardiovascular surgeon, underscored the importance of proactive heart health screening, particularly for individuals over the age of 40. This demographic should prioritise regular check-ups to identify potential issues early.

The post-COVID landscape has been marked by alarming reports of sudden cardiac events, often witnessed in routine activities such as exercising or socialising. Dr. Chandola recommends that individuals be mindful of their heart health as lifestyle factors play a significant role in overall wellness.

Heart health can be adversely impacted by factors such as inadequate sleep, high stress levels, irregular habits, excessive consumption of processed foods, and a lack of physical activity. Dr. Chandola suggests that dedicating time each week for exercise and following a nutritious diet can greatly improve heart health outcomes.

Recommendations for a Healthy Lifestyle

To foster better heart health, Dr. Chandola advocates for specific lifestyle changes. A daily routine should ideally include seven to seven and a half hours of sleep and at least 150 minutes of exercise each week. Engaging in brisk walking is recommended to increase cardiovascular fitness. Additionally, maintaining a consistent eating schedule can contribute positively to heart health.

Dr. Chandola highlighted that individuals have gradually started to seek out preventive care rather than only consulting medical professionals after experiencing symptoms. It is increasingly common for people to undergo screenings, allowing them to understand their health status proactively.

He further clarified that traditional tests such as ECG and echocardiograms may not provide a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s heart condition. In contrast, angiography, while more effective, can be uncomfortable. To bridge this gap, Dr. Chandola mentioned the availability of innovative technologies such as the biosensor device from iLive Connect, which continuously monitors health metrics over several days.

Focus on Collaborative Research in Heart Health

On the occasion of World Health Day, Dr (Prof.) M. Srinivas, Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, remarked on the significance of collaborative research in the medical field. He stressed the importance of standing in solidarity with scientific principles to enhance health outcomes in the community.

The commitment to research aims not only to identify and address prevalent health issues but also to foster a deeper understanding of conditions that disproportionately affect certain populations. Dr. Srinivas emphasised that this approach could yield benefits for the nation’s overall health and well-being.

As discussions around heart health and its complexities continue to evolve, the emphasis on prevention, early detection, and research collaboration remains crucial. Experts advocate that individuals maintain awareness of their health and take proactive steps to mitigate risks associated with heart disease, especially in light of the disturbing trend of sudden cardiac events.
