The Uttarakhand Forest Training Academy (UKFTA) has introduced a new initiative providing free accommodation in its hostels for students. This initiative aims to promote ecological education in the state and is directed primarily at the younger generation, often referred to as Gen Z. The trial period for this facility is set for 15 days and is targeted at students from various government-run educational institutions.

According to Sanjiv Chaturvedi, the Director of UKFTA, this decision was influenced by a commitment to student welfare and a desire to enhance environmental awareness among future leaders. The initiative reflects an effort to make the Academy more accessible to those engaged in studying ecology and related subjects.

The recent proposal to offer free hostel stays was instigated by a request from undergraduate students at Veer Singh Garhwali Uttarakhand University of Horticulture and Forestry. These students had previously been charged for accommodation at the Academy’s hostels.

Assessing the Fees Charged to Students

An internal review at UKFTA revealed that the fees students were required to pay for hostel accommodation were equivalent to those charged to state government officials. This practice raised concerns regarding its fairness, as students typically lack independent income sources.

The examination of these circumstances led the Academy management to advocate for a new policy granting students free access to hostel facilities. A proposal to this effect was sent by Director Chaturvedi on September 9, 2023, leading to a formal discussion within the Academy.

Following discussions, the recommendation for complimentary accommodation was officially approved by the relevant department on September 16, 2023. This swift action demonstrates UKFTA’s responsive approach to student needs and concerns.

Facilities Offered at Mayuri Hostel

The free hostel stay initiative is being implemented at Mayuri Hostel, which is the newest addition to the facilities at UKFTA. This hostel is equipped with modern amenities designed to provide a comfortable environment for students during their stay.

While the initial offering is limited to a 15-day period for students from government-funded institutions, there is potential for extension based on feedback and the success of the programme. Future assessments will determine if the duration and scope of the initiative can be expanded.

It is worth noting that a similar programme was initiated under Chaturvedi’s leadership in September 2022, when he was the Chief Conservator of Forests in the Research Wing. During that time, all 26 biodiversity centres across the state were made available for student visits without charge, further emphasising the Academy’s commitment to ecological learning.
