Train Services Disrupted in Delhi Amid CJP Protests

The CSR Journal Magazine

Train services in Delhi were severely affected on Saturday, October 10, as protests by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) prompted extensive security measures, resulting in cancellations and disruptions. Affected passengers at New Delhi Railway Station reported difficulties, including internet restrictions hindering digital transactions. One commuter, Abhinav, 23, expressed frustration after discovering he had left his wallet at home, which, coupled with the lack of mobile internet, made it impossible for him to complete payments for his purchases.

The announcements about train cancellations added to the growing sense of confusion at the station. Abhinav, who was waiting for a train to Varanasi, learned of his train’s cancellation only after arriving at the station. Reports indicate that over 170 trains were cancelled throughout the day, leaving numerous passengers stranded without prior notice of these changes.

As the situation unfolded, many passengers expressed their dismay. One railway official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the extent of the cancellations, stating that the disruptions were part of a broader security clampdown executed in response to the planned CJP demonstration.

Security Measures Tightened Amid Protests

The authorities implemented Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to enforce strict security measures across central Delhi. Barricades were erected at key intersections, and police deployed extensively to maintain order and prevent the gathering of large crowds. Observations near major sites like Jantar Mantar indicated that security personnel outnumbered civilians significantly, with officers checking the identification of individuals trying to access sensitive areas, which included the railway stations.

This additional scrutiny and restriction affected not only demonstrators but also commuters who had no involvement in the protests. Passengers faced barriers as they attempted to navigate their way through the city, encountering delays caused by barricades and heightened police presence.

Reports indicated that the crowd at New Delhi Railway Station was lower than usual due to these disruptions, which altered the regular flow of commuters typically seen at the station. Many passengers found themselves caught in the crossfire of political action without a clear understanding of the ongoing situation.

Impact of Cancellations on Rail Travel

The Indian Railways had anticipated the potential for significant delays and passenger congestion, leading to the pre-emptive cancellations of numerous trains. On Friday, October 9, the Railway Ministry communicated with various railway zones, citing concerns over road traffic congestion that might hinder access to stations during the protests. As a result, all Mail and Express trains due to arrive between 4 am and 2 pm on October 10 were cancelled.

Previous incidents of traffic disruptions linked to protests also influenced this decision, as over 5,000 passengers missed trains on October 8 due to severe jams caused by earlier demonstrations. Actions were taken to mitigate similar challenges on the anticipated day of protest, yet these measures resulted in significant inconvenience for unwitting passengers.

The disruptions led to uncertainties surrounding travel plans, as passengers who arrived expecting to board their scheduled trains were met with cancellations, requiring them to seek new arrangements at short notice. The collective impact of these events underscored a complex scenario where political agendas interfered with the mobility of everyday citizens in the capital.
