A 16-year-old student has been declared brain-dead following a tragic incident that occurred during an office-bearers’ ceremony at a convention hall in Mangaluru. The collapse of a supporting wall left five other students injured on Saturday, according to police reports. The event took place at the Rama Laxminarayan Convention Hall, where attendees had gathered to participate in activities related to the appointment of student union officials.

City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy provided insights into the event, indicating that overcrowding caused several students to lean against a wall in the corridor. This wall, apparently in a weakened state, subsequently gave way, precipitating a fall that resulted in the injuries of multiple individuals.

The five injured students were promptly taken to Highland Hospital in Mangaluru. Among them were Mohammed Shanan Ahmed, aged 18, Haneef, aged 23, Dawood Farsin Ahmed, aged 18, Mohammed Shakeel Hussain, aged 18, and another 16-year-old boy. The latter was admitted to the intensive care unit and is currently reported to be in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses have relayed their observations about the circumstances leading up to the wall’s collapse. One student described the balcony area as heavily crowded during the incident. They expressed concerns regarding the structure’s condition and suggested that the old building required renovation.

Another eyewitness recounted the chaotic moments following the collapse, stating that many students were present in the balcony at the time. The witness noted that friends were injured in the fall and immediate efforts were made to rush them to the hospital.
