Six Individuals Arrested in Cross-Border Drug Smuggling Operation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested six individuals as part of an investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) linked to a cross-border drug smuggling network. This operation has revealed a significant drug trafficking scheme involving the illicit transportation of heroin from Afghanistan into India. The arrests were made following extensive investigations that uncovered the complexities of the smuggling operation.

On October 11, Lovejit Singh, also known as Labba, and Manjeet Singh, referred to as Manna, were apprehended. Subsequently, on October 18, Prabhjit Singh, Gurjot Singh, and Ramandeep Singh were arrested, with Gurpreet Singh being taken into custody on October 20. The ED’s statement outlined the roles of these individuals in coordinating the smuggling, storage, and distribution of heroin across the regions of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi.

The arrested individuals are reportedly key members of a syndicate that smuggled heroin from Afghanistan and Iran, concealing the drugs within shipments of talc stone and gypsum powder. The ED noted that the accused had established a front company named Sandhu Exports, owned by Prabhjit Singh, to facilitate the drug smuggling activities.

Details of the Investigation Unveiled

The investigation was initiated following the seizure of 293.81 kg of heroin from containers imported by Sandhu Exports at Nhava Sheva Port, conducted by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). Additionally, the Delhi Police Special Cell seized 352.71 kg of heroin from two vehicles and a flat in Faridabad, Haryana. This brings the total amount of heroin seized to 646.52 kg, highlighting the scale of the operation.

The ED’s investigation has uncovered a sophisticated network for heroin smuggling and money laundering. The agency identified multiple bank accounts and cash transactions linked to the accused, revealing how they disguised the origins of illicit funds. These funds were layered and integrated into seemingly legitimate financial activities, complicating the tracing of the money trail.

It was further disclosed that the syndicate did not make any payments to Afghan suppliers until the drugs were sold in the local market. This practice ensured that financial risks were minimised. The accused also utilised cash payments to acquire multiple vehicles from the second-hand market, which were used for transporting drugs from storage facilities to distribution points.

Methods and Logistics of Drug Trafficking

The investigation highlighted that the drugs smuggled from Iran and Afghanistan were imported via Nhava Sheva Port in Mumbai. After arriving, they were stored in a rented godown located in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, before being distributed for local supply in various parts of Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana. To evade detection by law enforcement agencies, the syndicate transported the drugs in smaller quantities of 10 kg.

In previous operations, the ED has attached properties in Jandoli Village, Rajpura, Punjab, along with multiple bank accounts held in the names of the accused individuals and fixed deposits. The use of cash for purchasing high-end smartphones and the employment of encrypted communication applications for coordinating smuggling activities further illustrate the sophisticated nature of this criminal network.

The ED continues to investigate the broader implications of this operation, aiming to dismantle the entire network involved in cross-border drug trafficking and money laundering. The arrests mark a significant step in combating drug-related crimes and ensuring accountability within the criminal justice system.
