The festival of Janmashtami, celebrated on September 4, will lead to school closures in numerous states. This occasion commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna and holds cultural significance in various regions. The following day, on September 5, Baba Jiwan Singh Ji’s birthday will be observed as a holiday in Punjab.

Additional holidays include the observance of the first Prakash of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and Saragarhi Day on September 12 in Punjab. Meanwhile, Ganesh Chaturthi, celebrated on September 14, will bring a break to educational institutions in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and several others. Students in these states may find themselves engaged in academic activities leading up to the longer Dasara break or quarterly holidays. In addition, schools in West Bengal are expected to maintain standard classes ahead of the more significant Durga Puja holiday scheduled for October.

The varying regulations across educational boards including state boards, CBSE, and ICSE underscore the need for careful planning.

Highlights of September Festival Breaks

Among the key holidays in September, Vishwakarma Puja, which falls on September 17, is recognised in Bihar, Assam, and parts of Gujarat. This festival celebrates Lord Vishwakarma, the deity of architecture and engineering. In Gujarat, the observance of Samvatsari, taking place on September 18, will also result in school holidays.

In Kerala and Rajasthan, significant events taking place on September 21 include Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi and Ramdev Jayanti, which are marked with school closures. Following this, on September 23, Shaheedi Diwas in Haryana will offer another day off for students in the region.

Meanwhile, several states will observe Anant Chaturdashi and Ganesh Visarjan on September 25, leading to further holidays in Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat, and selected regions. On September 28, Punjab will celebrate the birthday of S Bhagat Singh Ji, adding yet another important date to the month’s holiday calendar.
