In recent statements, Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, has called for a closer examination of India’s coaching classes, labelling them as a ‘mafia’. He indicated that these institutions play a significant role in undermining the educational framework across the country. Drawing parallels with China’s previous struggles with similar educational systems, he argued for the necessity of scrutiny in this area.

Sanyal stressed the importance of including the coaching sector in discussions about educational reforms, indicating that the issues faced in India’s educational landscape are reminiscent of past challenges encountered in China. He referenced effective measures taken by China to enhance public education while reducing the influence of coaching classes, suggesting that India should consider similar strategies.

He asserted that a comprehensive review of the coaching system is overdue, stating that its influence has considerable ramifications on how education is delivered and perceived in India. Emphasising the need for accountability, Sanyal’s remarks signal a push towards establishing stricter oversight in this domain.

Calls for Updates to National Education Policy

During the interview, Sanyal addressed the National Education Policy (NEP), advocating for essential improvements to this framework. He remarked that as the NEP was developed in a context before the advent of artificial intelligence, it requires updates to remain relevant in today’s rapidly evolving technological environment.

He recognises positive aspects of the NEP but insists that change is imperative to adapt to new realities. Sanyal proposed that revitalising the policy will better align it with contemporary challenges faced by the education sector, thus enhancing its effectiveness and relevance.

Furthermore, he pointed out that while the NEP has its strengths, there is an urgent need to adapt to modern advancements and ensure that educational strategies are reflective of current conditions to foster a more effective educational experience for students.

Support for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test

In defending the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), Sanyal offered insights into the history and necessity of this examination. He noted that before NEET was implemented, India faced a cumbersome system of multiple exams often accompanied by capitation fees. According to him, NEET aimed to standardise the examination process, providing a single, streamlined path for aspiring students.

Sanyal likened NEET’s introduction to the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), suggesting that while critiques may arise regarding operational challenges, it is essential to recognise the significant improvements made over prior systems. He underlined that discussions surrounding NEET should focus on enhancing its functioning rather than labelling it as ineffective.

He acknowledged the necessity for continuous improvements, especially in preventing exam-related malpractices such as question paper leaks. Sanyal advocated for a robust examination system that ensures results accurately reflect student performance, positing that doing so is crucial for the integrity of academic assessments.

Need for a Strong Educational Framework

In his analysis of educational systems, Sanyal made specific reference to the historical connections between Indian and Chinese examination practices. He contended that while India has a substantial legacy of competitive exams, there is an urgent need for a well-functioning educational machinery.

He described the necessity for effective mechanisms to prevent malpractices within the examination system. This includes ensuring that the integrity of questions is maintained and that students’ results are reflective of their true capabilities.
