On 8 September 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stones and inaugurated various development projects in Vadodara amounting to over Rs 35,000 crore. This event was part of the ‘NaMo for Viksit Bharat’ initiative and attracted considerable public enthusiasm. The assembly of supporters highlighted the significance of these projects in advancing regional development.

Among the notable projects, three segments of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) were developed at a cost exceeding Rs 20,700 crore. The routes, covering 326 kilometres, include the New Sanand-New Makarpura, New Umbergaon-New Saphale, and New Saphale-New JNPT sections. These initiatives are expected to enhance cargo movement by providing direct access to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and minimising logistics costs.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister launched freight train services from New Sanand, New Makarpura, New Umbergaon, and New JNPT to improve transportation efficiency. He also inaugurated a passenger train service linking Tanda Road with Vadodara (Pratapnagar), thereby augmenting public transport facilities in the region.

Railway Connections and Projects Announced

As part of the ongoing railway expansion, PM Modi dedicated the Jobat-Tanda Road new rail line to the nation, which is included in the Chhota Udepur-Dhar project. This rail line is pivotal for connecting remote and tribal areas in Alirajpur to the national railway network, thereby promoting accessibility and development.

Additionally, three new railway projects related to a span of 329 kilometres were announced, costing over Rs 9,700 crore. These projects include the Vadodara-Ratlam third and fourth lines, gauge conversion on the Miyagam Karjan-Choranda-Malsar line, and the doubling project on the Vishwamitri-Dabhoi section. These initiatives are intended to enhance the operational capability of rail transport in the region.

In line with the transportation strategy, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for three National Highway projects costing approximately Rs 1,780 crore. These include the six-laning of the Kamrej-Chalthan section of NH-48, additional infrastructure for the Vadodara-Surat section of NH-48, and grade-separated structures at various junctions on NH-53. This development aims to improve the road connectivity and facilitate smoother traffic flows in the region.

Government Projects for Local Development

In addition to the aforementioned projects, various initiatives worth around Rs 2,600 crore from the Government of Gujarat were highlighted. Among these are the Vadodara Urban Development Authority’s Ring Road Phase II and a 110 MW floating solar project at Kadana Dam. The construction of a new office for the Vadodara Municipal Corporation is also part of the agenda, indicating a focus on improving local administrative infrastructure.

Moreover, ongoing projects to be inaugurated included housing developments under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and a significant water supply project aimed at serving 11 villages in eastern Vadodara. These initiatives are designed to enhance living standards and improve local amenities in the area.

The foundation stone laying and inauguration ceremony conducted by PM Modi represent a substantial investment in Vadodara’s infrastructure and local communities, with the potential to catalyse further economic growth and development.
