PM Modi In Assam To Unveil Connectivity, Data And Transport Projects Worth Rs 5,450 Crore

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on Friday to inaugurate and launch development projects worth over Rs 5,450 crore, aimed at boosting connectivity, digital infrastructure, education and urban mobility across the North-Eastern Region.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi will land at the Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on the Moran Bypass in Dibrugarh around 10:30 AM, where he will witness an aerial display by fighter jets, transport aircraft and helicopters.

Emergency Landing Facility And Strategic Infrastructure

The Emergency Landing Facility is the first such infrastructure in Northeast India and has been developed in coordination with the Indian Air Force. Designed as dual-use infrastructure, it can support both military and civilian aircraft during emergencies.

Officials said the facility will play a crucial role in disaster response and strategic operations by enabling rapid deployment of rescue and relief missions. It can handle fighter aircraft weighing up to 40 tonnes and transport aircraft up to 74 tonnes at maximum take-off weight.

The Prime Minister will also inspect the newly constructed Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu over the Brahmaputra River. Built at a cost of about Rs 3,030 crore, the six-lane extradosed prestressed concrete bridge connects Guwahati with North Guwahati.

The bridge is expected to reduce travel time between the two sides to about seven minutes. Given the region’s high seismic risk, it incorporates advanced safety features including base isolation technology and real-time structural monitoring systems.

Digital Push And Education Boost

As part of the visit, Modi will inaugurate the National Data Centre for the Northeast at Amingaon in Kamrup district. The facility will host mission-critical applications for government departments and serve as a disaster recovery centre for other national data hubs.

Officials said the data centre will strengthen digital service delivery in the region by providing secure and reliable infrastructure for citizen-centric programmes under the Digital India initiative.

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Management Guwahati, which is expected to significantly enhance higher education and management training opportunities in the Northeast.

Clean Mobility Initiatives

In addition, Modi will flag off 225 electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme across four cities: Guwahati, Nagpur, Bhavnagar and Chandigarh.

Guwahati will receive 100 buses, while Nagpur and Bhavnagar will get 50 each and Chandigarh will receive 25. The initiative aims to improve public transport while reducing pollution through cleaner mobility solutions.

Authorities estimate that more than 50 lakh people will benefit from affordable, reliable and environmentally friendly transport services once the buses become operational.

Overall, the visit marks a significant push for infrastructure development in Assam and the wider North-Eastern Region, with projects spanning strategic defence assets, transport connectivity, digital capacity and urban sustainability.
