Another Nepali Student Dies By Suicide at KIIT Hostel Room in Bhubaneswar, 2nd Case in 3 Months

Following the death of a Nepali student 3 months ago from KIIT university, another shocking incident has come to light from the same university. Prisha Shah 20-years-old, a Nepali student was found dead.

Prisha’s body was found in her hostel room at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar, on Thursday evening. The girl was studying computer science and hails from Birgunj area of Nepal.

Investigation ongoing

Following the incident the police immediately reached at the spot. The authorities stated that she was found hanging  in her room. Furthermore, an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of death.

Commissioner S Devdutt Singh said the girl was found dead in her hostel room on the campus and is suspected to have died by suicide. The circumstances that may have led her to die by suicide are unclear.

Previous Case and Rising Concerns

The recent incident marks the second such tragedy involving a Nepali student at KIIT in less than three months. According to reports , in February, another Nepali student, Prakriti Lamsal, also died by suicide.

Prakriti ended her life after alleged harassment and blackmail by a fellow student. The accused, Advik Shrivastava, a third-year B Tech student was later arrested by Bhubaneswar police. He was arrested at the city airport while he was allegedly trying to flee the scene.

University under scrutiny

The university had previously faced flak for its handling of the case. Reports suggests that the university officials ordered over 1,000 Nepali students to leave the campus.

However as the thousands of Nepali students were left stranded. Following this the external affairs ministry had subsequently intervened which led the university switch to damage-control mode and issue apologies. The incident  led to widespread protests and diplomatic intervention.

University and Official Response

So far the involved university has not  released an official statement regarding the recent suicide. However, the Nepal Embassy and the family of the victim have been informed. Meanwhile, the authorities are ensuring a thorough investigation into the matter.
