LA Olympic Chair Expresses Regret Over Past Emails With Ghislaine Maxwell

Email Exchanges From 2003 Surface in Court Documents

Casey Wasserman, chairperson of the organising committee for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, has expressed deep regret over email exchanges he had with Ghislaine Maxwell in 2003. The emails, which recently surfaced through newly unsealed court documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, contained casual and light-hearted messages that have drawn public attention due to Maxwell’s later criminal convictions.

Maxwell, a British socialite, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in facilitating the sexual exploitation and trafficking of underage girls by financier Jeffrey Epstein. The disclosed emails between Maxwell and Wasserman were written nearly two decades ago, before any criminal allegations against her were public.

Wasserman Responds to Public Disclosure

In a statement issued following the public release of the documents, Wasserman said he “deeply regrets” the tone and content of his communication with Maxwell at the time. He added that the emails reflected a period when the full facts about Maxwell’s activities were not known to him or the public.

Wasserman further emphasised that he has had no contact with Maxwell for many years, and condemned the serious crimes for which she has been convicted. He reiterated his commitment to integrity and transparency in his professional and civic engagements.

Emails Among Thousands of Released Documents

The email exchanges are part of thousands of pages of documents that were recently made public as part of a long-running civil case in the United States. The documents include testimony, evidence and correspondence related to Epstein and his associates.

Within the 2003 email chain, Wasserman and Maxwell are seen exchanging light-hearted messages. While no illegal content is contained in the emails, their exposure has nevertheless attracted attention due to the associations and context in retrospect.

Court filings show that these communications were uncovered as investigators worked through Epstein’s extensive network of contacts. Maxwell, who was convicted in 2021 on five counts including sex trafficking of a minor, has been the subject of ongoing legal and public scrutiny.

No Impact Foreseen on LA Olympic Planning

At present, there is no indication that the emergence of these emails will affect Wasserman’s role in the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Wasserman, who is a prominent figure in sports and entertainment business circles, has played a significant role in shaping the vision and planning of the upcoming Games in Los Angeles.

The International Olympic Committee has not made any public comment concerning the email disclosures or Wasserman’s response. The LA28 Organising Committee continues preparations for the global event, scheduled to be held in California’s largest city in four years.

Jeffrey Epstein died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges. Investigations into his activities, and those of his associates, have continued across multiple jurisdictions, resulting in fresh disclosures through various legal proceedings.
