Ghost Mode is Here: Instagram Plus to Launch With Anonymous Story Viewing

The CSR Journal Magazine

Meta is set to alter the Instagram experience with the introduction of Instagram Plus, a premium subscription service currently being tested in select markets, including Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines. This initiative aims to provide everyday users with new benefits, enhancing their interaction with Instagram Stories.

Key Features of Instagram Plus

The Instagram Plus subscription will offer several exclusive features, primarily centered around Instagram Stories, which are popular among users. Subscribers will have the capability to view Stories anonymously, meaning that users can check the content without the original posters knowing they have viewed it. This change addresses an important aspect of user privacy, as Instagram typically notifies content creators of all viewers for their Stories.

Additionally, Instagram Plus subscribers will be able to see the number of times their Stories have been rewatched, a feature unavailable to those using the free version. Another enhancement allows users to create unlimited audience lists for Stories, removing the limitation of having just one specific Close Friends list for selective sharing.

The subscription also offers users the option to extend the visibility of a Story by an extra 24 hours, as well as the ability to spotlight a Story once per week, prominently displaying it at the front of the Stories tray for increased attention. Other new features include sending animated “Superlikes” on Stories and an improved method of searching through the list of viewers to quickly find specific individuals who have interacted with the Story.

Distinction from Meta’s Verified Subscription

It is important to note that Instagram Plus is distinct from the existing Verified subscription service offered by Meta. The Verified subscription is tailored for creators and businesses and includes features such as verification badges and enhanced protection against impersonation. Instagram Plus targets regular users, thus separating its functions and benefits.

Pricing Structure for Instagram Plus

Although Meta has yet to officially release pricing details for Instagram Plus, preliminary reports suggest that costs may vary by region. In Mexico, the subscription is priced at approximately 39 Mexican pesos, equivalent to around Rs 200 per month. In Japan, it costs approximately 319 yen, which translates to about Rs 188 per month, while in the Philippines, the price stands at around 65 pesos, or about Rs 100 per month. The testing phase is likely to expand to additional regions in the near future.

Meta’s Broader Revenue Diversification Strategy

The rollout of the Instagram Plus subscription service is aligned with Meta’s ongoing efforts to diversify its income beyond traditional advertising revenue. Concurrently, the company is reportedly exploring the introduction of a premium subscription for WhatsApp. Other social media platforms, including Snapchat and X, have successfully implemented paid subscription models, with Snapchat Plus recently surpassing 25 million subscribers.
