The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed a notable high-value contract with a start-up for a quantum project, marking a milestone in the country’s technological advancements. This agreement was formalised in New Delhi between the Director of the Technology Development Fund (TDF) and Zero mK India Private Limited, a start-up based in Alwar, Rajasthan.

The contract is the first high-value undertaking under the Rs 500 crore corpus sanctioned by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for projects focusing on deep technology and innovation.

The project involves the development of a 20 millikelvin (mK) dilution refrigerator, a specialized cryogenic apparatus that can achieve extremely low temperatures essential for various quantum applications. Such ultra-low temperatures are critical for the functionality and testing of numerous quantum computing platforms and related technologies.

The indigenous creation of this device aims to enhance India’s competencies in quantum technology, advanced cryogenics, and related strategic sectors. This initiative aligns with the National Quantum Mission, which seeks to foster a self-sufficient quantum-ready ecosystem within the country.
