There are many speculations around the sudden resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. A recent report has confirmed that he had collapsed while attending an event in Delhi. As per his resignation letter, ‘medical advice’ and ‘health’ were mentioned. The first paragraph of his resignation stated, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”
There are speculations that his continuous differences of opinion with the judiciary and the Opposition on the notice regarding the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma could also be a possible reason. However, earlier on July 17, Dhankhar had visited Yamuna Vatika and Baansera along with his wife Sudesh Dhankhar, when he collapsed and she was seen taking care of him.
This wasn’t the first instance when he was seen unwell. A month earlier, during a visit to Kerala, he was seen walking with support from his wife. A similar incident occurred during the Golden Jubilee celebration of Kumaon University in Nainital, Uttarakhand, where he collapsed again due to overcrowding at the venue.
In March, he was admitted to AIIMS Delhi with a complaint of chest pain. Doctors had advised him to take rest and avoid frequent trips.
Aware of his situation, President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation and informed the Ministry of Home Affairs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also accepted his resignation and wrote on X, “Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health.”
