A delegation consisting of over 70 representatives from BRICS member nations and partner countries recently completed a visit to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh. The visit was aimed at discussing shared healthcare priorities and resulted in the adoption of a consensus-based declaration. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Economic Advisor Geetu Joshi announced the outcomes, noting that several key initiatives were agreed upon by all delegates.

During a media briefing, Joshi highlighted that the attendees reached a consensus on nine priority areas for the year, including two significant initiatives led by India. The first initiative aims to promote healthy lifestyles to combat obesity and other non-communicable diseases, while the second focuses on advancing mental wellness. Plans were announced to create a network of centres of excellence to foster mental health collaboration among BRICS nations.

The successful conclusion of these discussions marks a pivotal step in enhancing cooperation in healthcare among member countries, reflecting a commitment to improving health outcomes across different regions.

Insights Gained from PGIMER Visit

During the delegation’s time at PGIMER, the international representatives were given a comprehensive view of the practical implementation of India’s healthcare framework, Ayushman Bharat. PGIMER Director Vivek Lal remarked on the positive reception of their patient care model and research capabilities, stating that delegates were particularly impressed by the scale at which complex tertiary procedures are managed.

According to Lal, the visitors expressed admiration for the efficient execution of the Ayushman Bharat programme, which covers complex medical procedures such as neurosurgeries and organ transplants. This interaction served to not only showcase India’s healthcare advancements but also exhibit the potential for collaboration in health services delivery.

By highlighting their methods of health service delivery, PGIMER aims to inspire collaboration and innovation in healthcare systems across the BRICS nations, as countries look to learn from each other’s successes and challenges.

Strengthening Ties Among BRICS Nations

Highlighting the importance of international collaboration, the Ambassador of Cuba to India, Juan Carlos Marsan Aguilera, remarked on the deepening ties between the two nations, particularly in the fields of medical technology and healthcare. He stated that the discussions had provided a platform to reinforce cooperation among BRICS member states aimed at achieving high-quality healthcare for their populations.

Aguilera noted the history of cooperation between Cuba and India in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology, facilitated by a memorandum of understanding between both nations’ health ministries. He affirmed ongoing plans to enhance collaboration in telemedicine and the integration of Artificial Intelligence into medical services.

The BRICS delegates’ visit offers a unique opportunity to not only share best practices but also to forge stronger partnerships that can lead to improved health outcomes across participating countries. Through collaborative efforts, member states aim to achieve shared healthcare goals, reflecting a unified commitment to public health advancement.
