He indicated that much of the investment required would have to originate from the private sector.

NITI Aayog plays a crucial role in formulating long-term growth strategies for India. The recent report focused extensively on four sectors: chemicals, textiles, telecom, and solar PV, demonstrating their diverse opportunities within India’s manufacturing landscape. In textiles, the sector is a vital contributor to employment and economic output, representing 2 per cent of India’s GDP and 11 per cent of manufacturing GVA. In the fiscal year 2025, textile exports reached $37.7 billion, employing over 4.5 crore individuals. However, the sector must enhance its competitiveness in man-made fibres to meet shifting global demands. Recommendations include improving the cost competitiveness of raw materials, scaling up production, and fostering international trade relationships.

The telecommunications and network equipment sector presents significant potential, although India’s reliance on imports remains a concern. The domestic market, valued at nearly $25 billion in fiscal year 2025, is anticipated to double by 2032. In contrast, exports have been limited, revealing a heavy dependency on imports, particularly from China. More than 80 per cent of crucial components are imported from that country, highlighting the need for domestic production capabilities.

In solar PV manufacturing, despite advancements in module and cell production, challenges persist further along the supply chain, particularly with regard to imports of essential materials like polysilicon and wafers. The report suggests that strengthening local supply chains will be essential for reducing dependency on foreign imports.

For India to successfully transition into a global manufacturing leader by 2047, strategies must focus not only on increasing production capacity but also on advancing along the value chain. The 4th Pay Commission in 1986 further modified the basic pay structure, raising the minimum salary to Rs 750 and increasing the maximum pay to Rs 8,000. During the past 24 hours, Dharamshala experienced some of the heaviest rainfall, while areas such as Kangra, Bilaspur, Mandi, and Solan received light to moderate showers predominantly in the evening and night. The highest rainfall recorded in this period peaked at 91 mm, with ongoing weather conditions prompting continuous rainfall across many parts of the state.

Sharma noted that while light to moderate rainfall will prevail on August 14, there is a potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations within specific districts. Areas such as Chamba, Mandi, and Shimla might also experience significant rainfall in isolated spots. Rainfall activity is predicted to carry on into August 15, albeit with a possible decrease in intensity. A yellow alert has been issued for the districts of Bilaspur, Kangra, and Mandi.

Forecast for Upcoming Days

The IMD forecasts a resurgence in monsoon activity starting August 16, especially impacting districts like Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi, where heavy rainfall is anticipated. Rainfall patterns are expected to persist through August 17 and 18, prompting orange alerts for the regions of Kangra and Sirmaur on August 18, with predictions for very heavy rainfall at isolated sites.
