Apple’s Siri Upgrade to Enable Multitasking in iOS 27 and macOS 27

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple is anticipated to introduce a new feature for Siri, which will enable the virtual assistant to handle multiple requests simultaneously. This capability is expected to be included in the forthcoming iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 operating systems scheduled for release later this year. Users will have the option to combine various commands into a single prompt, allowing queries such as checking the weather, scheduling a calendar event, and sending a message all at once.

Current Limitations and Context

Currently, Siri allows for follow-up requests without the need to repeat the activation phrase. However, these requests must still be processed one at a time. Enhancing the ability to manage multiple requests in a single command aligns Siri’s functionality with contemporary AI assistants that utilize extensive language models, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Upcoming Announcement at WWDC

The upgraded version of Siri is expected to be formally announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 8. The technology giant initially showcased a new AI-enhanced Siri in June 2024, but the launch had been postponed due to various engineering challenges.

Expansion of Siri’s Capabilities

Reports indicate that Apple is planning to expand Siri’s capabilities beyond its current integration with ChatGPT. This may allow the virtual assistant to interface with additional AI services, such as Alphabet’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude, providing users with a broader range of query options directly within Siri.

Testing of a Standalone Siri Application

Additionally, Apple is purportedly testing a standalone Siri application for devices including the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This app may facilitate access to users’ previous interactions, potentially displaying past conversations in a list format or as a grid featuring text previews. Such functionality could enhance user experience significantly.

Integration Improvements Expected

Deeper integration of Siri across various system applications is also being explored. A proposed “Ask Siri” toggle would permit users to send selected content into a new Siri conversation effortlessly. Furthermore, a “Write with Siri” option might be added to the keyboard menu, enabling users to generate or edit text with Siri’s assistance.

Preview Label on New Features

Some of the advanced capabilities slated for Siri have been marked as “Preview,” indicating that Apple might present these features as works in progress upon initial release. This approach could allow for user feedback and subsequent enhancements in future updates.
