Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the next major focus of infrastructure investment in India will centre around artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and quantum technology. Speaking at an event held by the IIT Madras Alumni Association in Bengaluru on September 26, Sitharaman emphasised the urgency for increased investments in AI hardware, training, and skills development.

She reiterated the necessity for India to enhance its digital infrastructure and to develop capacity that supports the integration of AI technologies across different sectors of the economy. According to Sitharaman, substantial investments are required to propel the country into its next phase of technological advancement.

Investment Necessities for AI and MSMEs

Sitharaman identified that significant funds must be directed towards AI hardware and the training of educators and institutions to foster ongoing skill enhancement related to AI applications. Furthermore, she pointed out the importance of making AI solutions accessible to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which span a diverse array of industries.

Businesses, she noted, require not only technological access but also qualified trainers who can assist them in leveraging AI to boost productivity and enhance competitiveness on a global scale. This partnership between technology and training is deemed vital for the MSMEs to evolve and thrive.

The Minister firmly stated, “Investment in AI is definitely the next frontier,” highlighting that the necessary scale and breadth of investment would involve significant collaboration between academic institutions and industry stakeholders.

Economic Growth Projections and Technological Innovations

In her discussion about potential economic growth, Sitharaman expressed confidence that India could achieve growth rates exceeding ten per cent. She specified that such growth will require concerted efforts across various sectors and highlighted a national goal towards self-reliance and a developed India, referred to as Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat.

She placed a strong emphasis on the role that technology and innovative solutions from startups could play in this growth trajectory, indicating the need for these advancements to permeate various sectors, including agriculture. Sitharaman cited examples such as drone usage, precision mapping, and technology-enhanced productivity gains as areas where innovation is paramount.

Additionally, she welcomed constructive suggestions for structuring early-stage and patient capital for deep-tech hardware companies, which generally require longer timeframes to generate revenue. This initiative aims to create a sustainable ecosystem that supports hardware development within the country.
