38 Kg Ganja Seized From Train At Kerala Station

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Thursday afternoon, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) seized 37.7 kg of ganja, valued at approximately Rs 19 lakh, from the Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express at Aluva railway station in Kerala. This operation occurred just ahead of the Diwali festival, a time when increased vigilance is common among law enforcement agencies. The seizure was made during a routine inspection of Train No. 22504 after its arrival at the station.

During the inspection, RPF personnel noticed four unattended sacks in a general compartment. Initially, these sacks appeared to contain jaggery, a common sweetener in Indian households. However, upon closer examination, officers uncovered that ganja had been concealed within the sacks, hidden beneath layers of jaggery. This method of concealment raises concerns about the tactics employed by smugglers to evade detection.

As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with this incident. Authorities are actively working to identify the individuals responsible for transporting the illegal substance. The RPF has emphasised the importance of apprehending those involved in drug trafficking, particularly during festive seasons when such activities may increase.

Operation Led by RPF Crime Intelligence Branch

The operation was executed by a team from the RPF Crime Intelligence Branch, under the supervision of Inspector Jipin AJ from Thiruvananthapuram. The initiative was conducted following directives from Senior Divisional Security Commissioner Mohammed Haneef. This structured approach highlights the RPF’s commitment to tackling drug smuggling and ensuring passenger safety on trains.

The seized ganja has been handed over to the Aluva Excise Department for further investigation. This transfer of evidence is crucial for any potential legal proceedings against those involved in the drug trade. The RPF has noted that this incident is part of a larger trend, as smugglers have previously attempted to transport ganja hidden in various everyday items such as cricket bats, footwear, inverter boxes, and paint containers.

In light of this seizure, the RPF has announced that it will intensify inspections aboard trains and at railway stations during the Diwali festive season. This proactive measure aims to deter further attempts at drug smuggling and enhance the overall safety of railway passengers. The RPF’s commitment to rigorous checks underscores the importance of maintaining security and preventing illegal activities within the railway network.

Ongoing Efforts Against Drug Trafficking

The recent seizure at Aluva railway station is part of the RPF’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking across the Indian railway system. Authorities are aware that festive seasons often see a spike in illegal activities, prompting them to enhance their surveillance and enforcement measures. The RPF has previously reported various methods used by smugglers, indicating a need for constant adaptation in their strategies.

Community awareness and cooperation are also vital components in the fight against drug trafficking. The RPF encourages passengers to report any suspicious activities or unattended luggage while travelling. Such vigilance can play a significant role in preventing the illegal transport of drugs and ensuring a safer travel experience for everyone.

As investigations continue, the RPF remains steadfast in its mission to uphold the law and protect the integrity of the railway system. The collaboration between various law enforcement agencies is essential in tackling the complex issue of drug smuggling, which poses significant challenges to public safety and health.
