Will ChatGPT Get Expensive? OpenAI Eyes Subscription Changes

OpenAI is currently reassessing its subscription model for ChatGPT, as indicated by Nick Turley, the head of the AI program. During a recent appearance on the Bg2 Pod podcast, Turley suggested that the company may move away from offering unlimited subscription plans in the future. This proposition follows a vision articulated by OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, who envisions intelligence being treated as a utility akin to water or electricity.

Comparison to Utility Services

Turley likened the concept of unlimited AI subscriptions to the idea of unlimited electricity. He stated, “In the current era, having an unlimited plan is like having an unlimited electricity plan. It just doesn’t make sense.”

This statement reflects a broader industry discourse on how AI services may be marketed going forward. Recently, Altman faced scrutiny for suggesting that OpenAI might begin to sell access to intelligence on a metered basis, similar to traditional utility models.

Current Subscription Pricing and Plans

The current structure for ChatGPT includes a free version with limitations, a Plus plan priced at Rs 1,999 per month offering greater access, and a Pro plan available for Rs 19,900 per month that provides unlimited prompts and enhanced performance. Additionally, a budget-friendly ChatGPT Go plan is offered at Rs 399 per month in India. However, OpenAI has not modified the pricing framework for its premium offerings since their debut in December 2024.

Anticipating Changes in Pricing Strategy

Turley remarked on the inevitability of change in pricing structures across industries as the pace of technology evolves. He stated, “There’s no world in which pricing doesn’t significantly evolve when the technology is changing this quickly.”

He emphasized that while OpenAI intends to maintain a free tier to ensure accessibility for all users, a review of the pricing model is necessary to align with technological advancements. Turley expressed his expectation for a pricing recalibration, citing the scale of recent technical and product innovations.

Industry-wide Trends in AI Pricing Models

OpenAI may not be the only organization exploring this shift in subscription models. Last year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella disclosed that the company was contemplating a change in its pricing strategy, potentially offering charges on a “per agent” basis rather than per user.

This shift underscores the growing integration of AI in professional environments. Another competitor, Anthropic, has already implemented a pay-as-you-go pricing mechanism, billing users on a per-token basis for services like Claude Code.
