Viasat Executive Emphasizes Importance of Satellite Communications for Societal Functionality

The CSR Journal Magazine

NEW DELHI: During the opening session of the DefSat 2026 conference in New Delhi, Ben Palmer, President of Viasat Commercial, highlighted the essential role of satellite communications in modern society. He described satellite communications as “dual use oxygen,” emphasizing their importance for various applications, including weather forecasts and early warning systems. Palmer noted that without robust, reliable access to satellite communications, societies would face significant challenges.

Strategic Significance of Spectrum Access

Palmer elaborated on the necessity of having assured access to different spectrum bands and resilient satellite communications for national security and economic stability. He urged the importance of connectivity across alternative orbits and radio frequencies. He stated, “We are innovating to ensure governments have access to assured connectivity via alternative orbits and alternate radio frequency spectrum. Our focus is on improving cyber resilience and electronic warfare capabilities along with different forms of enabling technologies.”

Future of Space-Enabled Security

The three-day conference convened military leaders, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to discuss advancements in space-enabled security. A pivotal topic during the discussions was the increasing integration of unmanned systems in contemporary military operations. Palmer referenced the ongoing situation in Ukraine, pointing out how such platforms yield significant military results while mitigating risks to personnel.

Innovations in Tactical Communication Technology

Palmer highlighted Viasat’s ongoing efforts to develop compact communications terminals, some comparable in size to a coffee cup. These innovations aim to facilitate beyond line-of-sight communications for tactical unmanned platforms, representing a significant leap in operational capabilities for military personnel.

India’s Strategic Approach to Space Sovereignty

In discussing India’s strategic positioning, Palmer praised the government’s long-term vision regarding space sovereignty. He described the decision to resist external market dominance in international forums as a beneficial move, helping to maintain a broader range of choices for the country. “The Government of India’s grand strategic approach to assuring its space sovereignty is commendable. This transcends mere initiatives like ‘Make in India’ and emphasizes a balanced, pragmatic approach to governance,” he stated.

Collaboration for Domestic Capabilities

Viasat, having recently integrated Inmarsat, continues to foster partnerships with Indian entities such as BSNL to enhance domestic capabilities. The entire event at the Manekshaw Centre featured exhibitions from defense and space startups, contributing to the rich tapestry of discussions and insights.
