A significant gathering of student protesters convened near the Vidhan Sabha in Ranchi, Jharkhand, on August 10, as part of the JPSC-JSSC Reform Manch’s demonstration against alleged discrepancies in the examination and recruitment processes. The participants formed a human chain before marching towards the Vidhan Sabha, calling for the government’s attention to their concerns.

One protester articulated their demands for the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination, as well as a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the reported irregularities. He stated, “We are not going to stop today. Our first demand is to cancel the JSSC-CGL exam, secondly, a CBI probe.” Another participant emphasised their determination, saying, “We will move ahead when the barricading is opened; till then we will sit here.” The protesters remained resolute in their quest for accountability.

Accusations Against the State Government

During the protest, participants expressed dissatisfaction with the state government, claiming that despite Jharkhand being a mineral-rich region, students are left in a state of uncertainty due to governmental policies. A protester accused, “While the whole country and world are using Jharkhand’s minerals, students here are kept in the dark due to the government’s policies. And today we demand answers peacefully.” Their statements reflected a broader frustration over governance and transparency.

During the march, some protesters reported that security personnel were halting vehicles in order to manage the situation, which they alleged was obstructing the peaceful protest. Allegations against the police indicated attempts to control the size and participation of the demonstration. These actions were met with discontent from the protesters, who viewed them as steps to diminish their voices.

Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) MLA Jairam Kumar Mahato addressed the media, declaring, “This is a failure of the government. They should have accepted the demand (for cancellation of exams). The government indeed accepted several demands; I thank them for this. But the important demand is about the JSSC-CGL exam cancellation. Maximum irregularities happened here. Abhay Tiwari has admitted that he got about 400 candidates selected.” His criticisms highlighted perceived lapses in governance and the need for reform.

Government’s Response to Protests

In response to the escalating protests, Jharkhand Minister Irfan Ansari asserted that the government stands in solidarity with the youth. He remarked on the BJP’s actions, calling their protests outside the Chief Minister’s residence a diversionary tactic. Ansari stated to reporters, “The BJP is an expert in diverting the youth. We stand with the youth; the government stands with you. We are holding talks and will find a solution. Remain peaceful.” His comments aimed to reassure the protesting students of the government’s commitment to address their concerns.

Earlier on the same day, the Leader of Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly, Babulal Marandi, alongside several BJP leaders, was reportedly detained by state police while participating in protests directed at the Chief Minister’s residence. This incident underscored the escalating tensions surrounding the demands for accountability in the JPSC and JSSC examination processes.

The protesting aspirants have consistently maintained that their key demands—including the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination, a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities, and reforms to the recruitment process—have not been fully met by the state government. The ongoing situation highlights the students’ resolve to seek justice and transparency regarding the alleged issues in the examination system.
