Six individuals lost their lives when a two-storey residential building collapsed following an explosion in the Plaka district of central Athens. The tragedy occurred on Friday, prompting a swift response from emergency services. According to the Greek fire brigade, rescue crews incorporated dogs, cameras, and sensors to search the debris for survivors and recover victims.

Rescue teams initially focused their efforts on locating an elderly couple who resided in one apartment and four tourists who were staying in another. Sadly, their search concluded with the discovery of all six individuals’ bodies amid the ruins, as confirmed by fire brigade spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the explosion, with the fire brigade’s crime investigation unit deployed to the scene to examine potential causes. Athens Mayor Haris Doukas indicated that the blast likely stemmed from issues related to gas infrastructure, as reports of a gas odour have been noted in the vicinity.

In the aftermath of the explosion, ambulances remained present to transport the deceased to a hospital for identification. The identification process is crucial given the context surrounding the tourists, who were reportedly two American couples. They were due to check in at the residence before proceeding to Athens airport for a flight scheduled at 3 p.m. on Friday, but they never arrived.

The investigation will include gathering testimonies from local residents and businesses to piece together the events leading up to the explosion. The aim is to ensure that the building’s safety standards and any potential negligence are thoroughly examined.

Extent of Damage

The explosion had severe repercussions not only for the building but also for the surrounding area. The two-storey structure was entirely destroyed, leaving it in fragments of twisted metal, shattered tiles, and concrete debris. Personal belongings and clothing were strewn across the wreckage. In addition to the collapsed building, the explosion caused significant damage to nearby homes, shops, and vehicles.

Reports indicate that debris and broken glass were scattered as far as three blocks away from the site. It demonstrated the blast’s extensive impact on the locality. Residents have expressed concern over safety in the area, given the nature of the incident.
