Ropeway worth 13 crores collapses in Bihar’s Rohtas, was scheduled to open on Jan 1

The CSR Journal Magazine

A newly constructed ropeway in Bihar, built at a cost of 13 crore rupees, has collapsed. The ropeway, which took six years to build, collapsed during a trial run in Rohtas district. However, there are no reports of casualties in the accident. The administration has ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Questions are being raised about whether the ropeway collapsed due to the use of substandard equipment.

The ropeway was reportedly scheduled to be opened to tourists on January 1, 2026.

Ropeway to facilitate devotees visiting the Chaurasan Temple

The 1,324-metre ropeway is reportedly being built by Kolkata-based Ropeway and Resource Private Limited (RRPL) at an estimated cost of Rs 13 crore under the Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation. The project includes five towers and 12 trolley cabins, each with a seating capacity of four passengers.

The ropeway service aims to facilitate devotees visiting the Chaurasan Temple and to improve access for tourists to Rohtasgarh Fort, situated about 1,400 feet above sea level and regarded as one of Bihar’s major tourist attractions. At the time of the accident, four trolleys were moving along the cable line. Project workers and officials were present at the site.

The incident occurred during a load trial of the ropeway connecting Rohtas block with Rohtasgarh Fort and Rohiteshwar Dham. Engineers and technical experts were reportedly conducting tests when one of the pillars near Tower No 5 gave way, triggering a chain reaction that caused multiple pillars and four trolley cabins to fall to the ground.

Khurshid Karim, a senior engineer of the Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation Limited, said that during testing, the trolleys got stuck at one point due to excessive weight, and that’s when the accident occurred. Khurshid claimed that some work on the line is still pending. He said that a team of experts from Kolkata is arriving to inspect the entire route. The senior engineer assured that the service will not be allowed to start until the authorities are completely satisfied with the safety aspects.

“The ropeway will not be opened to the public until all testing is completed to full satisfaction. Public safety remains the top priority,” an official said.

Opposition alleges corruption

Opposition in the JDU-BJP ruled stated alleges that the accident was caused by substandard construction, and the real reason is the ‘chronic disease of corruption’.

Talking about the same, Bihar Congress State President Rajesh Ram, said, “The incident is a result of corruption within the Bihar government. Questions were raised about the quality during the construction itself, but the NDA government ignored them due to the lure of commissions.” Ram also demanded a high-level investigation and that the construction company be blacklisted.

Meanwhile, the Rohtas District Administration said the incident has been “taken seriously”. “A committee has been constituted by the chairman of the Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation to conduct an impartial and transparent inquiry into the collapse. The panel has been given the responsibility of examining technical, administrative and human factors, assessing compliance with standard operating procedures, and determining whether negligence or technical faults were involved.
