‘Planned Attack on Hindus’: BJP Cites SIT Findings in Murshidabad Riots

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) following revelations from a court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) report on the April 11 Murshidabad violence, alleging that the findings expose a pattern of “anti-Hindu brutality” and deliberate political shielding by the West Bengal government.

At a press conference held in the capital, BJP spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi accused the ruling TMC of orchestrating and then covering up the violence, which he claimed was “planned targeting” of Hindu residents in the district.

‘Secular Mask Removed’, Says BJP Spokesperson

Referring to the two-hour violence window on April 11—from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.—Trivedi said the SIT’s observations dismantle the “so-called secular narrative” projected by the TMC and its INDI alliance partners.

“None of those who often raise their voices on issues like Indo-Pak conflict or human rights spoke a word about the brutal killing of Hargovind Das and his son Chandan Das. The silence is telling. The same voices that showed empathy for Pakistan after Operation Sindoor have turned their backs on Murshidabad’s Hindu victims,” Trivedi said.

Allegation of Political Patronage and Police Apathy

The BJP leader further alleged that the SIT report names a local TMC councillor, Mehboob Alam, as a key figure behind the attacks, stating that the violence was carried out under his instructions while local police and administrative officials remained passive observers.

“The TMC had initially blamed outsiders from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, trying to deflect attention. But now their own MLA’s name has surfaced. It is clear that the attacks were premeditated and had political cover,” he said.

He further questioned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee directly: “Will you take action against your own party leaders? Will you apologise for the dismissive and insulting comments made by TMC leaders about the victims?”

Loss of Faith in State Police

Trivedi claimed that more than 113 houses were damaged in the violence and that many families fled the area, some taking refuge in nearby Malda district. The residents, he said, are now demanding permanent deployment of Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), having “lost faith in the West Bengal Police.”

“The SIT report notes that distress calls made by villagers went unanswered. The attackers, their faces masked, deliberately targeted Hindu homes. If selective killings of Hindus in Kashmir shocked the nation, Murshidabad cannot be dismissed,” he said.

BJP’s Political Challenge to Mamata Banerjee

Calling the findings “deeply disturbing,” the BJP accused the state government of downplaying the violence and protecting its own leaders. Trivedi concluded with a pointed challenge: “The West Bengal government can no longer claim that there was no violence. The facts are now before the public. Will the Chief Minister now act, or continue shielding those responsible?”

The BJP has signalled that it will intensify political and legal pressure on the TMC government in the days ahead, potentially raising the issue in Parliament and demanding central intervention.
