Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah asserted on Tuesday that the devastating flood, which surged into Rasuwa via the Bhotekoshi River from Tibet, was a result of climate change. In a post on social media, he indicated that escalating temperatures in the Himalayan region have increased the probability of such catastrophic events. Shah urged that this issue be brought forward with urgency to the international community.

The flash floods, which occurred on August 26, were reportedly caused by the collapse of ice and rock near the Nepal-Tibet border. This calamity has led to extensive destruction of towns and villages in both northern and central Nepal. As per the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, by Tuesday, the death toll had tragically reached 1,050, with an alarming number of nearly 4,000 individuals still unaccounted for, including 583 foreign nationals and 83 security personnel.

Shah articulated that experts have determined the flash flood in the Bhotekoshi River was due to a significant avalanche of rock and ice in the Himalayas, highlighting the necessity for local residents to exercise increased vigilance. He noted that, according to specialists, this flood could have been instigated by a considerable section of a glacier breaking off from a height, thus precipitating the major flood and ongoing melting in the affected area.

The Prime Minister elaborated that as the water cascaded down from the Himalayan heights into Nepal, it accumulated momentum, resulting in widespread destruction in lower-lying regions. Shah stated that the government is currently engaged in extensive search and rescue missions, relief and rehabilitation efforts, as well as providing medical treatment and psychological support to affected individuals.
