The lively and colorful Lathmar Holi has officially started in Barsana and Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, marking the beginning of a week-long series of festivities. This traditional event attracts both devotees and tourists from across India and the globe. With deep roots in the local lore surrounding Lord Krishna and Radha, the festival emphasizes joy, music, and the distinctive use of sticks during the celebrations.
Lathmar Holi is steeped in the mythology of the Braj region, portraying the playful interaction between the villages of Nandagaon, associated with Krishna, and Barsana, where Radha’s home lies. As per tradition, Krishna and his friends would visit Barsana to engage with Radha and her companions, who would humorously fend them off with sticks. Men from Nandgaon participate in the event in Barsana, where they are greeted by women with mock stick assaults, all while being showered in vibrant colors.
The atmosphere during the celebrations is electric, filled with Holi bhajans and the joyful chants of ‘Radhe Radhe.’ Participants joyously apply gulal, or colored powder, on each other, enhancing the celebratory mood. The streets are beautifully adorned with flowers, traditional decorations, and an array of sweets, contributing to the spirited ambiance. People of varying ages, from youngsters to the elderly, immerse themselves in the joy of the festivities.
Preparations for Secure Celebrations
The festivities in Mathura, recognized as the birthplace of Lord Krishna, will culminate in grand processions, cultural displays, and temple rituals. With an influx of devotees expected, local authorities have implemented extensive security measures to facilitate a safe and smooth experience. The administration has divided the region into eight zones and sixteen sectors for improved security, alongside employing CCTV surveillance, traffic diversion strategies, and barricades to manage the large crowds effectively.
Authorities Ensure Safety and Enjoyment
SSP Mathura, Shlok Kumar, stated that lakhs of devotees have already gathered for the occasion, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that all participants can enjoy themselves without facing any inconvenience. Measures are in place to address any harassment, with Anti-Romeo squads and CCTV cameras strategically positioned throughout the area. The local District Magistrate, CP Singh, highlighted the directives from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for a grand and spiritually enriching celebration.”

“The entire town has been decorated vibrantly, reminiscent of a bride. Teams focused on medical, sanitation, and logistical support have been mobilized in smaller sectors, ensuring devotee safety. The goal is to provide a delightful experience to the visitors, hoping they will return in future years. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has repeatedly emphasized the need for preparations that reflect both devotion and grandeur,” remarked the District Magistrate.
Initiation of Laddu Mar Holi
Prior to Lathmar Holi, the festive spirit was already alive with the energetic celebration of Laddu Mar Holi at the Shri Ladliji Maharaj temple in Barsana. Participants in the temple resonated with devotional songs and rituals, while the external festivities also included devotees openly sharing laddus, covered in colors, showcasing the essence of communal joy and unity that defines Holi.
