Ladakh Replaces Jammu and Kashmir in Aadhaar Records for Residents

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Union Territory administration has implemented a crucial change in the Aadhaar records for residents of Ladakh, with “Ladakh” now officially replacing “Jammu and Kashmir” in the State field. This adjustment follows the intervention of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, who recognised the need for this update to reflect the regional identity of the UT’s residents.

Since the formation of the Union Territory in 2019 from the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakhi residents encountered issues with Aadhaar records that still displayed the outdated name. The continued representation of “J&K” led to significant complications for the populace, prompting numerous complaints and concerns.

A press release detailed how Saxena addressed the delays regarding this essential matter, instructing the UT Administration to expedite the resolution. The administration subsequently engaged with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to facilitate the necessary adjustments at higher levels of authority.

Impact on Residents

The longstanding issue of incorrect Aadhaar records reportedly caused considerable inconvenience for the residents of Ladakh. Obtaining official services often became a complex process due to the mismatched identification status, as the State field did not align with the current administrative designation of Ladakh.

Residents faced various difficulties in utilising Aadhaar as a valid form of identity verification and address proof, affecting their access to essential services. Not only did this hinder individuals, but it also complicated matters related to the UT’s representation in various Aadhaar-linked official records and reports.

According to the Lieutenant Governor, the updated records will significantly alleviate procedural complications. He stated that ensuring accurate representation in official documents is vital for the convenience and identity of the people of Ladakh, further emphasising the administration’s commitment to responsive governance.

Innovative Mechanism for Updates

To address the issue effectively, the UT Administration collaborated with UIDAI to create an innovative mechanism that centralises the update process. Rather than requiring each resident to visit Aadhaar centres for changes, the administration has implemented a system based on specific PIN codes unique to Ladakh.

These PIN codes were verified through coordination with the Department of Posts, allowing for a systematic approach in updating records without placing additional burdens on residents. This well-planned initiative streamlines the process, enabling corrections to be made efficiently.

The release stated that this new procedure has brought substantial relief to the citizens of Ladakh, eliminating the need for individual visits to Aadhaar centres for updating details. Residents can now easily download their updated e-Aadhaar from the official UIDAI website, with the option to order a PVC Aadhaar card online for a nominal fee, further enhancing user accessibility.
