Iran’s President Urges India to Leverage Brics Influence in Mitigation Efforts

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during which the Iranian leader called on the India-chaired Brics organization to play a crucial role in addressing escalations against Iran amid the ongoing crises in the Middle East. This dialogue marks the second exchange between the two heads of state since unrest intensified on February 28. The Iranian embassy in India issued a statement clarifying the topics discussed, which centered on bilateral ties and both regional and international matters, particularly the military aggressions by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Pezeshkian’s Concerns Over Military Actions

During the call, President Pezeshkian highlighted the necessity for Brics to adopt an independent stance to halt aggressions towards Iran and to support regional and international stability. He elaborated on what he termed as unlawful attacks and crimes perpetrated by the United States and Israel, asserting that Iran did not instigate any conflict. Pezeshkian informed PM Modi that these military actions were taken without justification, disrupting ongoing nuclear negotiations and resulting in significant casualties, including the deaths of innocent civilians and schoolchildren. He specifically referenced strikes attributed to the Trump administration that targeted civilian infrastructure.

Allegations Against the US and Calls for Dialogue

Pezeshkian charged that the United States targeted a school in Minab, leading to 168 civilian fatalities, marking one of the most impactful tragedies in the ongoing conflict. He dismissed accusations that US military operations were aimed at hindering Iran’s nuclear ambitions, stating that the late Iranian Supreme Leader openly condemned nuclear armaments and prohibited their development through formal directives. The president refuted the portrayal of Iran as a destabilizing force in the region, arguing instead that Israel has been engaged in aggressive actions including attacks across several nations.

PM Modi’s Call for Peace and Security

In response, PM Modi expressed deep concerns over the rising tensions, strongly condemning assaults on energy infrastructure. He warned that these attacks could seriously jeopardize global food and energy security. Modi underscored the importance of dialogue and peace, stating that conflict serves no beneficiary. He suggested a regional security framework involving West Asian nations to enhance cooperation and maintain tranquility free from external encroachments.

Importance of Shipping Security Highlighted

In his statements on the phone call, PM Modi emphasized safeguarding freedom of navigation, particularly within the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage in global trade. He reiterated the need to ensure that shipping lanes remain navigable and secure, given their vital role in energy supplies. The Prime Minister also acknowledged Iran’s support concerning the safety of Indian nationals in the country amidst the ongoing regional tensions.

Diplomatic Engagement Intensifies Amid Conflict

This communication occurred against the backdrop of renewed US-Israel strikes on Iran’s Natanz uranium enrichment facility, aiming to hinder its nuclear program. Although Iranian media reported these incidents, no immediate indications of radioactive release were noted. In light of possible energy crises, India is increasing its diplomatic efforts with Iran to secure the steady flow of energy commodities and address pressing concerns over vital shipping routes, prioritizing dialogue over military involvement in the region. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also reached out to his Iranian counterpart to discuss the implications of the ongoing conflict on regional dynamics.
