Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar Stable After Foiling Flydubai Cockpit Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot, reportedly sustained severe injuries while thwarting an alleged attempt by his co-pilot to crash a Flydubai flight. The incident took place on September 30, 2026, during the flight’s journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv, which was carrying 174 individuals onboard. Following the event, the aircraft landed safely, successfully averting what could have been a significant tragedy.

Machchhar was subsequently admitted to a hospital located in Tabuk city, situated in northwest Saudi Arabia, for medical treatment. Official reports noted that he is in stable condition, and as of October 1, 2026, medical staff have been providing ongoing care. The Indian Embassy in Riyadh has been actively involved, ensuring that they remain updated on his health status.

The embassy expressed its commitment to supporting Machchhar’s recovery, stating that they are closely liaising with his family. They have assured the relatives that all possible assistance will be rendered in coordination with Saudi authorities, as they continue to monitor the situation closely.

Details of the Incident Unfold

Reports indicate that the co-pilot, identified as an Omani national by Israeli officials, allegedly stabbed Machchhar inside the cockpit of Flydubai flight FZ1073. The attack was described as sudden, sending the aircraft into a rapid descent of nearly 14,000 feet within a span of 30 seconds. Fortunately, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing crew members and passengers to overpower the assailant.

According to The Times of Israel, after being injured and reportedly covered in blood, Machchhar exhibited remarkable resilience. His crucial action of unlocking the door enabled others to intervene and stabilise the situation. Meanwhile, a separate crew of Flydubai pilots, who were also on board the flight at the time, took control and safely landed the aircraft at the Tabuk airport.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s spokesperson, Doron Spielman, confirmed these details and acknowledged the heroism displayed by Machchhar during the chaos. Netanyahu himself praised the pilot, referring to him as a “true hero” for successfully averting the crisis.

International Response and Ongoing Investigation

The incident has drawn considerable international attention, leading to various statements from officials around the world. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi also commended Machchhar, noting the pilot’s actions saved many lives and expressing hope for his swift recovery.

In the aftermath, Saudi authorities have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack. Meanwhile, both Indian and Saudi officials are in continuous communication to ensure that Machchhar receives the best possible support during his recovery.

As investigations proceed, officials are expected to provide updates on the situation. The Indian Embassy has reiterated its commitment to keeping Machchhar’s family informed and assisting them as needed, reflecting the international concern regarding this alarming incident in aviation security.
