India and China Restore Direct Flights and Border Commerce

The CSR Journal Magazine

India and China have taken a significant step towards mending their strained relationship by agreeing to reopen direct flights and resume border trade after years of standstill. This breakthrough comes as Beijing’s top diplomat concluded a pivotal visit to New Delhi, marking the most substantial diplomatic progress since deadly border clashes in 2020. The revival of ties promises to boost business, tourism, and people-to-people contact between the two populous nations, bringing hope for regional peace and prosperity.

Flights Resume After a Long Freeze

Direct flights between India and China had been suspended following the 2017 Doklam standoff and further delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, after intensive talks, both countries agreed to resume flights at the earliest and are finalising an updated Air Services Agreement to facilitate smoother air connectivity. This move is expected to ease travel for tourists, businesspeople, and media personnel, signalling a thaw in relations that had been frozen for over half a decade.

The reinstatement of direct air links will not only strengthen business ties but also pave the way for cultural exchanges and pilgrimage visits. Notably, the agreement will enhance access for Indian pilgrims travelling to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Tibet, with plans to expand these visits starting in 2026. The renewal of flights thus represents a symbolic and practical step towards rebuilding trust and cooperation.

Border Trade and Visas Bring Business, Tourism Back

In addition to flights, India and China have agreed to reopen and streamline border trade through key crossing points, including the Lipulekh Pass, Shipki La Pass, and Nathu La Pass. These trade routes are vital for local economies and communities living near the Himalayan border. By facilitating smoother trade and movement, both governments aim to revive livelihoods and promote cross-border business collaborations.

Further, the agreement includes easing visa processes to encourage tourism and professional exchanges. This visa facilitation is a boost for industries on both sides and is expected to reignite people-to-people connections after years of diplomatic chill. The revival of these corridors is seen as a pragmatic approach to deepen economic ties even as the countries continue negotiations on complex border issues.

Quiet Borders, Big Talks: How Diplomacy Won the Day

The breakthrough is also marked by efforts to manage the long-standing territorial disputes peacefully. Special Representatives from India and China agreed to create expert groups focused on boundary delimitation and effective border management. These mechanisms aim to prevent future skirmishes like the deadly Galwan clash in 2020 and ensure that the borders remain quiet while talks advance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in China soon, underscoring a new chapter of stable and predictable bilateral ties. As Modi stated, constructive relations between India and China contribute not only to regional peace but also to global stability. The diplomatic breakthrough is widely seen as a pragmatic response to evolving geopolitical challenges, including external pressures from U.S. tariffs under President Trump’s administration.

This historic turnaround underscores the importance of dialogue and cooperation for Asia’s future. After years of mistrust and confrontation, India and China appear ready to embrace engagement over estrangement, allowing neighbours and businesses to resume normal ties and communities to rebuild bonds across borders. The journey ahead remains complex, but for now, the skies and borders have reopened, lighting the way for renewed partnership between two of the world’s largest nations.
