The 2026 Pitru Paksha Mela in Gaya, Bihar, is blending traditional practices with modern technology to ensure a safe and convenient experience for devotees. Extensive measures have been implemented by local authorities to facilitate the smooth arrival and movement of pilgrims from both India and abroad. Under the guidance of Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, these innovations aim to enhance the overall experience of those attending the event.

One significant feature is the introduction of QR code-enabled wristbands, designed to improve safety for vulnerable groups such as children and elderly devotees. These wristbands will contain critical information, including family contact details. If a devotee becomes separated from their family, an alert message will be sent to the registered mobile number. Scanning the QR code will also allow easy retrieval of necessary information to help reunite loved ones.

Authorities have set up help desks throughout the mela, equipped with a Google Translator-based system. This service will assist devotees who speak various languages, enabling them to receive information in their preferred language, primarily in Hindi. Such measures are aimed at addressing potential communication barriers among attendees.

Enhanced Safety and Medical Support

For effective crowd management and law-enforcement, the mela will employ AI and camera-based systems. These technologies will alert officials to increases in crowd density at specific locations, thereby helping maintain order. Furthermore, AI technology will be instrumental in identifying and locating lost individuals during the event.

The administration has initiated a ‘Kayakalp’ campaign, focusing on beautification efforts within Gaya city during the Pitru Paksha Mela. Local children are actively participating in this initiative by creating artistic representations of Lord Vishnu on walls throughout the city. Such local engagement aims to foster a welcoming atmosphere for attendees.

In terms of healthcare infrastructure, the mela area will host 70 health camps staffed by 125 doctors and 178 paramedical personnel. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also stepped in to provide free primary medical treatment for devotees. Daily checks on the quality of drinking water are being conducted at PHED laboratories to ensure safety.

Convenient Facilities and Amenities for Attendees

To accommodate the anticipated influx of visitors, arrangements have been made for the housing of 75,348 people daily in the mela area. Additionally, 943 toilets, 134 bathing facilities, and 74 changing rooms have been constructed to meet sanitation and bathing needs. The provision of 280 hand pumps and 890 water taps ensures that attendees have access to adequate water facilities.

Transport services are also being optimised, with 150 free e-rickshaws operational in the mela area to facilitate easy movement. Special transport arrangements are in place to further enhance convenience for devotees attending the event. Furthermore, kitchens led by JEEViKA women will offer quality satvik meals at a nominal price of Rs 30, providing nutritious options for those visiting the mela.

With significant efforts directed towards improving safety, accommodation, sanitation, healthcare, transportation, food, and technology-driven services, the authorities are making strides to enhance the experience for all devotees during the Pitru Paksha Mela in Gaya. The integration of modern innovations with traditional practices represents an effort to respond to the evolving needs of attendees while honoring cultural heritage.
