The Calcutta High Court has delivered a crucial ruling addressing the ongoing debate over whether teachers should prioritize classroom teaching or census operations. Justice Krishna Rao issued clear directives outlining how educators can be drafted for census work without compromising academic schedules.

The judgment establishes a structured framework for deploying teachers:

Advance Notice: The Director of Census must inform school authorities well in advance regarding the exact dates, times, and locations required for teachers’ services, allowing schools to make alternative arrangements to maintain regular classes.

Official Duty Recognition: During the assigned census period, designated teachers will exclusively perform census duties rather than classroom teaching, with this period officially recognized as on-duty service.

Mandatory Participation: Teachers assigned to census responsibilities cannot refuse the assignment.

Background on the Controversy

The ruling follows a revised notification issued by the School Education Department, replacing an older directive and officially permitting teachers to count census duties as on-duty hours.

Previously, the state government’s initial directive stated that census work should not disrupt school education, suggesting that teachers perform these tasks after school hours or on weekends. This drew sharp scrutiny from the High Court, which questioned the practicality of expecting teachers to travel to distant census locations after a full school day ending at 4:00 PM.

Ahead of the court proceedings, the state government withdrew the older guidelines and issued a revised notification addressing these logistical concerns, while the Home Department had earlier emphasized that teachers should be utilized in a manner that avoids any disruption to students’ education.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is in need of significant structural enhancements to effectively tackle ongoing security issues surrounding examinations, according to Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, former Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC). In an interview with PTI, Kumar highlighted that merely replacing the NTA would not be the ultimate solution to the complex challenges it faces.

Kumar, who also chairs the Review Committee for the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasised the importance of treating repeated paper leaks as an “end-to-end examination-security challenge.” This sentiment follows a series of controversies, including the recent NEET UG paper leak that incited protests among students and prompted the resignation of a minister.

The government has taken steps to reinforce the NTA and its examination framework, motivated by these incidents. A high-level committee led by technocrat Nandan Nilekani was constituted, and Parliament has enacted a law to impose stricter penalties for malpractice in public examinations.

Challenges Faced by the NTA

Kumar pointed out that the NTA is responsible for conducting examinations for over 1 crore candidates annually. Given this scale, he stated that security measures need to encompass various elements, including input from subject experts, digital systems, and the logistics of examination centres and invigilators. The Radhakrishnan Committee had previously provided recommendations aimed at enhancing these processes, and Kumar reiterated the necessity for improved data security and collaboration with state governments.

<h4“The long-term solution lies in continuous risk assessments, limiting the number of people who handle confidential materials, and ensuring digital traceability at every stage of the examination process,” he asserted. By implementing these measures, Kumar believes that breaches could be significantly reduced, thereby improving students’ trust in the examination system.

Kumar was asked if the NTA had become overextended due to its extensive responsibilities. He acknowledged the large workload but clarified that the issue lies not solely in the volume of examinations, but rather in the intricate nature of each test. He suggested that a partnership model, proposed by the Radhakrishnan Committee, could allow ministries and regulators to take charge of specific aspects of the examination process.

Recommendations for Strengthening the NTA

Kumar stated that the NTA should strengthen rather than overhaul its existing framework, noting its accumulated expertise and technological resources. He pointed out that 35 out of 46 major action points from the Radhakrishnan Committee have already been implemented, which he believes is indicative of progress.

<h4“While recent initiatives such as the inclusion of approximately 600 experts and a four-tier question paper scrutiny system are positive steps, comprehensive reforms will require a multi-faceted approach,” he said. Kumar underlined that a long-term vision must focus on developing the NTA into a professional institution integral to national education.”

Emphasising the need for continual adaptation, he stated that infrastructure improvements should be ongoing to ensure that the NTA can meet evolving demands. He expressed the necessity of establishing more accredited examination centres, preferably within reliable public institutions, to enhance the examination experience for candidates.

In his closing remarks, Kumar outlined three core priorities for immediate attention: securing the examination lifecycle, establishing permanent professional capacity, and ensuring reliable examination centres and candidate services. Each stage of the examination process must be meticulously documented to maintain security, he concluded.

Rakhi celebrations are often marked by the exchange of sweets, but many siblings may prefer savoury options. For those who favour salty snacks, assembling a hamper containing a selection of their favourite treats can be an excellent alternative. Options might include roasted makhana, bhujia, chakli, flavoured nuts, popcorn, or even baked snacks that are wholesome and satisfying.

To personalise this gift, one can add a handwritten note which expresses a message of love or fond memories. This thoughtful touch will make the savoury snack hamper feel even more special and significant.

Dry Fruit and Nut Box for a Nutritious Touch

For those looking for healthy options, dry fruits and nuts serve as a fantastic substitute for traditional sweets. A combination of almonds, cashews, pistachios, walnuts, and dates can be beautifully arranged in a neatly packed gift box. This offers a nutritious choice that can be enjoyed guilt-free during the festive season.

Additionally, one might consider incorporating flavoured or roasted nuts to add an element of excitement. This way, the gift becomes a delightful mix that is both tasty and good for health, appealing to siblings who enjoy snacking without indulging in sweets.

Gathering a variety of dry fruits and nuts in an attractive package also reflects effort and consideration, making the gesture even more meaningful during Raksha Bandhan.

Dark Chocolate: A Decadent Option

While many may shy away from traditional mithai, not everyone avoids chocolate. If a sibling enjoys chocolate but finds Indian sweets excessively sweet, dark chocolate can be an enjoyable alternative. Opting for a selection of different flavours can cater to various tastes and preferences.

A simple Rakhi hamper can include chocolate bars paired with nuts or dried fruits, making the gift both delicious and appealing. This combination provides a sophisticated take on festive gifting while keeping in mind personal preferences.

Dark chocolate, rich in flavours and nutrients, also offers a more decadent yet healthier snack option, ensuring the sibling feels appreciated on this special occasion.

Homemade Snacks for a Personal Touch

Nothing epitomises thoughtfulness like preparing a homemade gift. Creating a sibling’s favourite savoury snack, such as baked mathri, roasted makhana, or spiced nuts, can prove to be a delightful gesture. This not only shows dedication but also personal connection.

Packaging these homemade snacks in a reusable jar or box can add an eco-friendly aspect to the gift. A small Rakhi note attached can also enhance the emotional value, making it a memorable part of the celebration.

By opting for homemade treats, the giver showcases an understanding of their sibling’s preferences, elevating the celebration beyond conventional gifting.

Creative Beverage Hampers for Unique Gifting

A beverage hamper is a unique approach that can appeal to siblings who enjoy sampling various drinks. Depending on their preferences, this hamper can include items such as specialty teas, gourmet coffee, hot chocolate, or herbal infusions. Adding a stylish mug or tumbler can transform it into a comprehensive Rakhi gift.

This option not only caters to personal tastes but also encourages the sibling to explore new flavours, making it a fun and refreshing gifting experience. The inclusion of beverages can significantly diversify the traditional gifting pallet.

Customising the hamper according to the sibling’s taste can further enhance its appeal, ensuring that it is cherished and enjoyed.

A 31-year-old MSc Physics student at IIT Delhi has tragically passed away after jumping from the sixth floor of the Lecture Hall Complex on Saturday morning. The incident occurred at around 8.33 am on August 22, when local police received a report of the incident. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, where the injured student was quickly transported to the campus hospital. Unfortunately, he was declared dead upon arrival.

According to police reports, the deceased had entered the campus through the main gate at approximately 8 am. Following his entry, he made his way to the Lecture Hall Complex, took a lift to the sixth floor, and reportedly jumped from the front of the building. The deceased, a resident of Bihar, was enrolled in the second year of the MSc Physics programme.

No Suicide Note Found

Investigative teams from the Crime and Forensic Science Laboratory conducted a thorough examination of the scene to collect evidence. Preliminary findings revealed no external injuries on the body apart from those consistent with the fall. Importantly, a suicide note was not located at the site.

A mobile phone discovered in the student’s pocket has been confiscated by the authorities and will undergo analysis as part of the ongoing investigation. This may provide additional insights into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The police are closely monitoring the situation and are in the process of gathering all pertinent information from the institution to assist in their inquiries.

Student’s Mental Health History

Sources have reported that the student had been receiving treatment for mental health issues prior to the incident. During this period, he had been residing off-campus with his mother. Furthermore, it has come to light that he had been admitted to VIMHANS Hospital for his mental health treatment.

In response to the incident, authorities are also seeking counselling records and any relevant documents from IIT Delhi that may shed light on the student’s mental health status. These records will be crucial in understanding his situation leading up to the tragic event.

The police are working diligently to verify the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and to identify the underlying reasons that may have contributed to this extreme action. Legal proceedings and further investigations are in progress, as officials look to gather comprehensive details.

Medhavi Bidhuri’s wicket celebration has garnered significant attention, making it a highlight of the Women’s Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2026. During the tournament opener for Central Delhi Queens against South Delhi Superstarz on August 20, she showcased her now-famous ‘6-7’ gesture after claiming the wicket of batter Nishika Singh. This occurred in the 16th over, with a diving catch completed by Arushi Goel at mid-wicket.

Bidhuri’s celebration, which involves raising and lowering both hands in a distinctive manner, has resonated with younger audiences, particularly among Generation Z and Generation Alpha. Despite her impressive performance, finishing with bowling figures of 2/24 across four overs, Central Delhi Queens ultimately lost the match by 29 runs.

This celebration holds personal significance for Bidhuri. Originally, she intended to wear her preferred jersey number 12, but it was already taken. Inspired by her younger sister’s suggestion, she opted for number 67, aligning it with the current trend and creating a unique celebration. After the match, she remarked on the inspiration behind her gesture and the number choice.

Progression in Delhi’s Cricket Scene

This viral incident marks just one highlight in Medhavi Bidhuri’s journey through Delhi’s cricket landscape. The 20-year-old right-arm leg-spinner has been a part of Delhi’s domestic cricket setup for several years, showcasing her talent at various levels, including the Under-19 team.

Bidhuri notably made an impact in the previous edition of the Delhi Premier League (2025), where, as a player for South Delhi Superstarz, she delivered a remarkable performance in the final against Central Delhi Queens. She claimed three wickets for 26 runs from three overs, helping her team defend a total of 121 runs and clinch victory by just one run.

Her consistent performances have drawn attention beyond the local circuit, positioning her within discussions surrounding the Women’s Premier League (WPL). She was among the players registered for the WPL 2024 auction, reflecting her growing recognition in the broader cricket community.

Current Campaign and Future Prospects

Now representing Central Delhi Queens in the DPL 2026, Bidhuri has started the season strongly, already securing two wickets. Her evolving profile and memorable celebration have made her a familiar name beyond the scope of Delhi cricket.

The combination of her emerging skills and viral moments not only enhances her personal brand but also elevates the profile of women’s cricket in the region. As she continues to perform, it is anticipated that she will remain a key player to watch in future tournaments.

The future looks promising for Medhavi Bidhuri as she navigates her ambitions in cricket, contributing to the growth of the sport for women in India. Her story highlights the increasing acknowledgment of female athletes in a traditionally male-dominated realm and serves as inspiration for aspiring cricketers nationwide.

The Indian wrestling team for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games has faced a significant challenge with the provisional suspension of wrestler Mukul Dahiya by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). Dahiya, who competes in the 86kg freestyle category, tested positive for the stimulant Mephentermine. This incident occurs just weeks prior to the Games scheduled to commence on September 19 in Japan, adding pressure to the Indian contingent.

Currently, Dahiya is in Yerevan, Armenia, participating in an exposure camp alongside other wrestlers preparing for the Asian Games. He has been regarded as a strong contender, particularly after securing a silver medal at the 2026 Asian Championships. His suspension drastically jeopardises his opportunity to compete, raising concerns for the Indian team regarding their representation in his weight class.

Reports indicate that the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) was not informed beforehand about Dahiya’s suspension. As the federation had already submitted its final squad for the Asian Games, replacing him at this stage appears increasingly difficult.

Recent Doping Incident with Another Wrestler

Dahiya’s suspension is not an isolated incident, as it comes shortly after another wrestler, Deepanshu, was provisionally suspended following positive results from an out-of-competition test in the 130kg Greco-Roman category. In that case, the WFI was swift to find a replacement for Deepanshu, promoting Ronak Dahiya, who finished behind him in the selection trials held on May 31.

The timing of Dahiya’s suspension presents a different challenge for the federation this time. While they managed to respond quickly in Deepanshu’s scenario, the same flexibility is lacking in Mukul Dahiya’s case due to the timing of the notification regarding his status.

Before the discovery of Dahiya’s provisional suspension on August 4, the WFI finalised their roster, making modifications challenging as the Asian Games draw near. The late arrival of this information has raised concerns about the implications for India’s medal prospects in wrestling.

Challenges in Making Replacements

The WFI had submitted its final list to the Indian Olympic Association in the first week of June, which further complicates the process of finding a substitute for Dahiya in the 86kg category. A timely adjustment is now implausible, limiting the federation’s options as the dates for the Asian Games approach.

In light of the scenario, the late notification surrounding Dahiya’s suspension is particularly unfortunate. The federation reportedly only became aware of his provisional suspension after it appeared on an updated NADA list. Unlike the earlier case with Deepanshu, where the WFI was informed by July 20, this situation leaves them with minimal time to act.

With less than a month remaining until the commencement of the Games, India risks competing without representation in the men’s 86kg freestyle category unless a significant change occurs. The ramifications of these developments highlight ongoing challenges within Indian wrestling regarding anti-doping compliance and the management of athlete eligibility.

A college relationship in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, has allegedly escalated into a serious case involving rape, extortion, and theft. A female student has accused her male classmate, Hardik Panchal, of repeatedly engaging in sexual acts against her consent and subsequently threatening her with the release of intimate photographs. The woman’s complaint depicts a distressing account of manipulation and coercion over an extended period.

Panchal reportedly convinced the student to enter a relationship by promising marriage, which allowed him to gain her trust. According to the allegations, the relationship began in December 2025 when they were both in the same college class. Following this, he is said to have taken her to hotels where he sexually assaulted her without her consent on multiple occasions, beginning in March 2026.

Alleged Extortion and Blackmail Tactics

Subsequent to the alleged assaults, Panchal reportedly sought financial assistance from the woman, claiming his father had experienced losses in the textile business. When she declined to offer support, Panchal allegedly resorted to threats, stating that he would make her intimate photographs public if she did not comply with his demands. This manipulation forced the woman into a vulnerable position, leading her to relinquish valuable gold jewellery belonging to her elder sister.

Between June 7 and August 12, 2026, the woman is said to have provided Panchal with 144.51 grams of gold jewellery, valued at over Rs 14 lakh. Panchal allegedly sold the items, assuring the woman that he would have new jewellery made to replace them. This deceitful arrangement heightened the woman’s fear and distress regarding the potential exposure of her private images.

The situation came to light when the woman’s sister checked the family’s gold storage and noted that several ornaments were missing. Upon questioning, the woman revealed that she had given the jewellery to Panchal. Following this, her father attempted to confront Panchal directly to seek clarity about the missing valuables, but was met with vague responses from both Hardik and his parents.

Police Investigation Underway

Faced with continuous threats and the absence of her jewellery, the woman eventually sought help from the police, resulting in the registration of an FIR at Nikole police station. Authorities have commenced a formal investigation into the allegations. Police inspector SA Desai noted that a panchnama has been conducted, and the woman’s medical examination will also form part of the inquiry.

Desai confirmed the details of the case, emphasising the seriousness of the accusations against Panchal, who is reportedly residing in Amraiwadi and is now absconding. Efforts are being made to apprehend him, as the police continue to gather evidence and testimonies related to the reported incidents.

This incident highlights a disturbing pattern of abuse and exploitation among students, raising pressing concerns about safety and consent in educational environments. The police are resolute in their efforts to bring justice and support to victims of such offences as the investigation progresses.
