The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, praised National Conference president Farooq Abdullah for his involvement in a recent protest in New Delhi. He described the 90-year-old leader’s participation as a significant manifestation of the ongoing struggle for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. Abdullah stated that the march served as a powerful symbol of their commitment to regaining constitutional rights for the Union Territory.

He expressed gratitude towards party members who made their way to Delhi at their own expense to join the demonstration. “I want to thank all those colleagues who travelled to Delhi on their own. Not a single colleague received any help from the party. We didn’t arrange plane or train tickets for them,” Omar Abdullah noted, highlighting their dedication to the cause.

His comments followed the protest, which demanded that the Indian Government restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. Omar Abdullah had previously accused the Union Government of attempting to obstruct the demonstration by preventing party leaders from reaching the event site. Despite these limitations, he reaffirmed his stance that the movement will persevere.

Reaffirmation of Commitment to Statehood

Following the protest, Omar Abdullah took to social media, conveying that their efforts would not be stifled. “We were stopped from getting to Jantar Mantar, and prevented from protesting peacefully for what is rightfully ours, but we were not silenced,” he remarked. The Chief Minister insisted that the recent events signified only the commencement of their ongoing struggle for statehood, rights, and dignity, asserting that these injustices would be continually challenged.

The National Conference has consistently urged the Indian Government to honour its promises to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, which the party claims was initially guaranteed in both Parliament and the Supreme Court. Since the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir into Union Territories following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, statehood has remained a pivotal demand for the party.

Omar Abdullah reaffirmed that the fight for statehood is critical, reflecting the sentiments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir who seek to reclaim their constitutional status. He indicated that the party will remain vigilant in pushing for these rights and will continue to mobilise its members for future actions to further their mission.
