External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has intensified his diplomatic activities on September 25, 2026, during the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) in New York. He has conducted a series of meetings with foreign ministers from various nations, including Armenia, Barbados, and Iraq, alongside an engagement with Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino. The minister shared insights from these discussions through social media platform X.

Jaishankar’s interaction with Armenia involved a focused dialogue with Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan. Following their meeting, he expressed pleasure in the discussions about bolstering bilateral ties. In addition to Armenia, the minister also connected with Barbados’ Foreign Minister Christopher Peter Sinckler, where they briefly reviewed shared interests and cooperation.

In discussions with Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, Jaishankar addressed ongoing developments in West Asia. Conversations highlighted the scope of India’s economic and energy collaboration with Iraq, showcasing India’s engagement in regional stability through cooperative efforts.

Engagements with Various Leaders

During his UNGA engagements, Jaishankar’s meeting with Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino was aimed at discussing potential avenues for collaboration between the two nations. Jaishankar expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to engage with the Panamanian leader, indicating a commitment to fostering bilateral relations.

The minister started the fourth day of his engagements with a meeting with Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne. Discussions during this meeting revolved around India’s development partnerships, capacity building initiatives, and cooperation on climate change, reflecting India’s commitment towards the Caribbean’s sustainable development.

Furthermore, Jaishankar met with Jorge Moreira da Silva, Chief of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), acknowledging the organisation’s logistical contributions in difficult contexts. He also engaged with UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, where they addressed global challenges, particularly in relation to food and energy security stemming from various conflicts.

Broader Diplomatic Engagements at UNGA81

Jaishankar’s agenda also included discussions with various leaders from Central Asia. Notably, his meeting with Sirojiddin Muhriddin, Foreign Minister of Tajikistan, was aimed at reaffirming their longstanding bilateral cooperation. The two ministers discussed ongoing regional developments, illustrating India’s focus on fostering cooperative relationships throughout Central Asia.

Among other notable meetings, Jaishankar had discussions with Australian Senator Penny Wong and Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi, enhancing connections across diverse regions. His engagement with Maldives Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam centred on bilateral relationships and broader multilateral cooperation, while talks with Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa explored avenues for strengthening ties between their nations.

Jaishankar also met with Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna. Discussions regarding the Ukraine conflict with Estonia’s foreign minister focused on its wider implications and the need for multilateral cooperation in addressing the crisis.
