The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a second extension for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Delhi. This decision provides voters with additional time to submit their enumeration forms and pushes the publication of the final voter list to October 27. The updated timeline was released on Tuesday, revealing that the door-to-door verification exercise conducted by booth-level officers (BLOs) will now last until August 17.

The draft electoral rolls are scheduled to be published on August 24, which is a shift from the earlier planned date of August 17. This revision comes at a time when the final rolls were originally set to be released by October 19.

Claims and Objections Window Modified

The time frame for voters to file claims and objections regarding the electoral rolls has also been adjusted. Under the new plan, this window will be open from August 24 to September 23, extending the previous period that was meant to run from August 17 to September 16. Poll officials have been tasked with addressing these claims and objections from August 24 up to October 22.

This extension serves as the second adjustment made by the ECI during the month, aiming to enhance voter participation in the electoral process. By providing this extra time, the ECI seeks to ensure that all potential voters have the opportunity to verify and rectify their information on the electoral rolls.

Progress on Enumeration and Digitisation

The pace of digitisation has encountered some delays due to various challenges. These include a significant number of voters who have not returned the forms, discrepancies in voter details, technical issues, and challenges in tracking down previously recorded voter information. The CEO’s office has appealed to residents who have not yet submitted their enumeration forms to do so without delay.

Overview of the SIR Process Initiation

The Special Intensive Revision of Delhi’s electoral rolls commenced on June 30, with booth-level officers actively engaging in a door-to-door distribution of enumeration forms. The qualifying date for participation in this exercise is set for July 1, 2026. Over 13,000 BLOs are involved in this vital endeavour, spanning all 70 Assembly constituencies across the capital.

The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s office has highlighted that the extension aligns with the overarching goal of the SIR initiative: to guarantee that no eligible citizen is excluded from the electoral roll and that no ineligible individual is included. This approach underscores the commitment to uphold the integrity of the electoral process in the nation’s capital.

As the revised timeline progresses, authorities are optimistic that these efforts will foster increased voter registration and active participation, ultimately contributing to a more democratic process in Delhi.
