Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Set to Launch in September 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple is set to make a significant shift in its product design with the anticipated release of its first foldable iPhone, commonly referred to as the iPhone Fold, expected to launch in 2026. Unlike many Android counterparts that have hastily entered the foldable phone market, Apple has taken a measured approach, spending years refining its design and technology. The iPhone Fold is designed to open horizontally like a book, catering to users seeking a device that can function as both a smartphone and a small tablet. Industry analysts indicate that the device will remain relatively slim, with a thickness of less than 10mm when closed and under 5mm when opened. The button layout is also reported to see changes, with volume controls moving to the top edge while the power button remains on the side, similar to recent Apple tablet designs.

Display and Build Quality

The displays are expected to be a focal point of Apple’s foldable strategy. When closed, the outer display will be around 5.3 to 5.5 inches, providing a standard smartphone experience, while the inner display is projected to measure between 7.7 to 7.8 inches when opened, resembling an iPad interface. Apple is reportedly exploring stronger protective materials for the foldable display, combining ultra-thin glass with advanced polymer films to enhance durability and clarity. A major challenge facing foldable devices is the visible crease along the hinge. Apple is believed to be addressing this issue by utilizing a reinforced metal plate under the display to distribute stress during bending and incorporating liquid metal components in the hinge to enhance strength and resistance to deformation.

Camera Specifications

The camera configuration of the iPhone Fold is expected to align with Apple’s existing approach, featuring fewer but highly optimized sensors. Current leaks suggest a dual rear camera setup, each utilizing 48-megapixel sensors. The front of the device is anticipated to include distinct cameras for both folded and unfolded modes. Reports indicate that the inner display might conceal its camera beneath the surface, while the outer display could feature a tiny punch-hole cutout.

Biometric Security and Connectivity

In an effort to accommodate the folding mechanism and larger battery capacity, Apple is expected to forego Face ID in this iteration. Instead, a Touch ID sensor integrated into the side button is likely to return, facilitating biometric security without occupying excessive internal space. On the connectivity front, the iPhone Fold will probably feature Apple’s proprietary C2 modem, continuing the transition away from Qualcomm components. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the device will adopt an eSIM-only configuration, eliminating the physical SIM tray.

Battery Life and Specifications

The battery life has the potential to be a standout feature of the iPhone Fold. Supply chain insights suggest that Apple is developing high-density battery cells and streamlining internal components to maximize capacity. If confirmed, this could lead to the largest battery ever utilized in an iPhone, a necessary adjustment given the power demands of the larger display.

Pricing and Launch Timeline

Regarding aesthetics, Apple is said to initially focus on classic black and white color options without any indication of more vibrant choices. In terms of pricing, estimates suggest that the foldable iPhone will range from $1,800 to $2,500 in the United States, placing it firmly in the ultra-premium category and likely making it the most expensive iPhone to date. The expected launch date is projected for September 2026, with advanced development stages already underway at Foxconn for mass production later in 2026. Though some delays into 2027 are possible, industry analysts are hopeful for a release aligned with Apple’s customary fall launch schedule.
