Apple Briefly Exposes Chinese Users to Apple Intelligence Features by Mistake

The CSR Journal Magazine

Recently, some Apple users in China unexpectedly found the Apple Intelligence features accessible on their iPhones. The features were listed as available in the device’s Settings app. However, it has been confirmed that this rollout occurred prematurely, as Apple had not yet secured the necessary regulatory approval for these features in the Chinese market. Currently, Apple Intelligence is not available in China due to specific regulatory hurdles.

Withdrawal of Features and Ongoing Regulatory Challenges

According to reports, the features that appeared were not linked to the beta version of iOS 26.5. Apple recognized its error and swiftly removed the features from user access. It was highlighted that the company has been preparing these features for several months but continues to await approval from Chinese authorities. Furthermore, Apple has indicated that it does not plan an imminent launch for these capabilities in the region.

Compliance Issues with Chinese Regulations

Some of the features that were mistakenly revealed contravene existing Chinese regulations. For instance, one of the features involves using Google’s reverse image search, which is prohibited in China. Apple has made it clear that it will not introduce AI features in the country without prior announcement and will avoid releasing such features during non-standard times, such as late at night.

Collaborations with Alibaba for AI Features

Apple’s quest to launch AI capabilities in China faces significant complications due to local regulations that restrict foreign technology. To facilitate the integration of Apple Intelligence features in China, the company is collaborating with Alibaba. Nevertheless, delays in obtaining authorization from China’s Cyberspace Administration (CAC), responsible for testing and approving AI models, persist.

Competitive Landscape in the Smartphone Market

While Apple navigates these regulatory issues, it is facing intense competition from domestic smartphone manufacturers, such as Huawei and Xiaomi. These companies have successfully integrated various AI features into their devices and have already captured significant market attention.

Global User Anticipation for Upgraded AI-Powered Siri

As Apple users in China await the rollout of Apple Intelligence features, many users across the globe are also looking forward to advancements in the AI-driven Siri. A preview of the upgraded Siri is anticipated during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 8, 2026. However, the company’s strategies concerning the release could still evolve.

Ongoing Internal Testing of New Siri Version

Reports indicate that the revamped Siri is currently under internal testing, carrying the codename Campo. This new iteration is designed to enhance its understanding of user requests, facilitate task completion within applications, access news content, and enable web searches using Apple-specific interfaces and models. The future of these features remains uncertain, awaiting both regulatory clarity and further development from Apple.
