AIADMK Accepts Two Seats for Upcoming Puducherry Assembly Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

PUDUCHERRY: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has confirmed its decision to contest two constituencies in the upcoming Assembly elections. Party officials stated that this move aligns with their commitment to coalition dharma. A Anbazhagan, the Puducherry unit secretary, expressed confidence that the NDA would secure a victory in the election.

Constituencies Confirmed

Anbazhagan announced that the AIADMK would contest from the Uppalam and Orleanpet constituencies. He remarked on the party’s previous experience in the last Assembly elections held in 2021, where they contested five constituencies but did not win any. However, this year, he is optimistic about winning both seats due to various factors affecting the election landscape.

Coalition Dynamics and Power Sharing

During an interaction with the media, Anbazhagan elaborated on the party’s adherence to coalition principles, emphasizing that their participation in only two constituencies was a decision made to honor the alliance. Discussions regarding the seat allocation took place on March 20 and again recently, culminating in the approval from party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami. The AIADMK leaders expressed enthusiasm regarding their allocated seats.

Political Aspirations for Leadership Roles

Addressing inquiries about the party’s political ambitions, Anbazhagan stated that if the NDA emerges victorious in the elections, the AIADMK would pursue a share in the governance structure. He emphasized that their involvement in politics is not merely for charitable purposes, but to advance the careers of their representatives, highlighting that a natural progression for a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) is to ascend to a ministerial position.

Alliances and Seat Distribution

The ruling party in Puducherry, the AINRC, has coordinated with the BJP-AIADMK alliance ahead of the Assembly polls. According to the agreement, the AINRC will contest 16 seats, while the BJP will take on the remaining 14. The arrangement followed discussions between Puducherry Chief Minister and AINRC leader N Rangasamy and BJP leader Mansukh Mandaviya, which took place at a local hotel.

Candidates Announced

On Saturday, the BJP released an official list of nine candidates for the polls scheduled for April 9. Among the candidates, A Namassivayam, currently serving as Home Minister, will be fielded for re-election from the Mannadipet constituency. The BJP has also allocated two seats each to the AIADMK and the Lakshia Jananayaga Katchi (LJK) as part of the alliance’s strategy.
